Was just curious if anyone here had ever broken a cv axle from off-roading? I recently got some new ones from Napa and these ones are slightly different in design. I noticed the outer joint is slightly smaller than oem. The remans I had before looked completely oem. I do now carry a spare cv offroad

I never have, and my truck has been through some hard hits, but I mainly do stuff that’s 30+ mph. Not as much crawling

Apparently I broke one yesterday going into 4hi in reverse in my driveway. Made a big bang noise. Thankfully it was under warranty. Still not sure if it was a reman CV axle that caused it or the reverse entry to 4hi. Opinions welcome.

If you were turning in 4X4 on dry pavement...surefire way to snap one.

Ok. So when Toyota recommends exercising the system a few times per year they mean wet pavement? Or snow /ice I presume.

I’d do it in gravel/sand/mud. Not wet pavement.

    Fine but I haven’t used 4wd yet.

I would definitely reccomended re-booting your axles

You can do it on dry pavement with no turns....a slight bend in the road wont hurt either.

Snow or ice is usually no problem with harder turns.

Best thing to do is put it in 4HI on a straight road. Doesn't have to be super straight but no tight bends or turns. Great thing with these trucks is the shift on the fly capabilities. Pavement can be dry ,just remember no turning

I have only broken 1 so far. It was already popping if i turned just right but I thought I could make it one more trip. I carry a spare so I replaced it at camp.

To tell the truth I can’t believe I haven’t broken more. I have had 35’s and double locked for a year now

For the uninitiated, it sounds like a repetitive rotational noise when driving as if you had a flat spot on the tire, after the bang of course.

Straight line on dry pavement. Been doing it for years. No issues.

I exercise the recommended 10 miles a month every 3 months. I just get on the freeway at a slow time of day and switch into 4Hi at 50mph. If you have an off-road I would only exercise the 4low and differential lock on loose ground. Obviously all models have 4low.

Yes. If you actually wheel these trucks you will find out that's definitely the weak spot. I would recommend against non-oem CVs. eBay tends to have used OEM take-offs and occasionally you can find them for ~$70 each

Or just spend $1k and buy RCVs
