On the trail? You have to cut the bolts if it’s a factory steering rack because they put the rack in before the engine. Idk about you but 90% of the people I know don’t carry a battery powered sawzall or grinder when wheeling

Hahaha well for future reference on the 2nd gens and up, they install the engine after the rack is in. You can take the nut off the bolt but when you go to push it out, it hits everything (forgot what it actually hits as it’s been a year or so) but you have to push it up, cut it, then let the bottom half fall out lol. It’s a major PITA. To put it back together, you put the bolts in upside down.

My experience isn't Toyota related, but it is related to the thread topic.

Back in 1984, my dad and I were Elk hunting in central Utah (neat Circleville). We were in my dad's 1974 Ford F250 4x4, bouncing around looking for a camping spot. We found a good place, and pulled in to park. Just as we stopped, the front end of the truck dropped several inches all of a sudden, and with a loud bang!.

We got out to see what had happened, and noticed the right front wheen laying flat on the ground..... as in 90* off from how wheels are normally positioned when they are on a moving vehicle (spare tires not included), and the front axle hub was sitting op top of the wheel.

Turns out a bolt in the knuckle joint broke, and the entire front wheel assembly snapped off.

We were only a few hundred yards off a "main" road, so we walked out and flagged down another hunter, who was kind enough to give us a ride into town to a local wrecking yard. We were able to find enough parts to go back up on the mountain to fix it. Pretty much burned up that day, but we were able to ultimately have a successful hunt. I killed my first Elk a couple days later :)

Replaced a broken U joint on a 1967 Ford dump body while on top of a landfill. I raised the dump bed, put it in 1st gear to pull away and loose the load and "pop". Cargo was a load of cattails pulled from a lake shore that had been sitting in the sun baking for 4 days. For the uninitiated, 4 day old rotting cattails smell like vomit and dirty baby diapers. Rolling around in the garbage juice under the truck wasn't fun either.

Yes. broke rear drive shaft at the yoke.pulled shaft and threw it in the truck bed, stuck a rag in the trans and drove home in 4WD using the front for front wheel drive. also broke the shifter in a manual. drove home in 3rd gear. it was no stopping just slow and go at stop signs

No, you can unbolt the AC compressor or unbolt the transmission cross Member and tilt the motor up. Still a really shitty job in general and NOT sth I ever want to do on the trail

Did he actually destroy the steering rack itself or do you mean he broke a tie rod on one side? Outer tie rods are usually what breaks when you see a rig with cross eyed tires on the trail, but those are extremely easy to replace on the trail if you have tools and spares.

Cutting in there also is a PITA. And how much does the new bolt cost?

Only 2 trail failures I've had are a blown CV axle and a blown sidewall on a tire. Both fixed on the trail. Tools and a jack are must have's if you wheel. I'll never understand how people can go 4x4'ing without any tools, recovery gear or emergency supplies. I'm more than happy to let someone borrow my stuff if they need it but you shouldn't rely on others to be prepared for you

edited to add - I know everyone starts off somewhere and when I first got into wheeling I had a basic home tool kit I would take with me that would hardly work for anything on the truck lol. I learned what tools to carry as I went along, also by learning from others around me with more experience. But it's always better to be over prepared than not.

Bolts are bolts. All that matters is the shank and grade. If you wanna spend more for “OEM” bolts then have it lol
