I wouldn't say I'm used to it but the people I have fired where REALLY bad for the team. So thinking of it that way makes it easier.

I would have to agree. If there is/ are detrimental aspects to a person or if they are a hindrance to the company or other employees, then it makes it pretty easy for me. As far as layoffs go, that can just plain suck.

A couple of times in an old job yes, but the people were total screwups. I had to work late because of them not showing up so it didn't bother me.

Not the same, but currently my part time job is running a dart league. Over the past 4 years I've had to throw people out of the league for a year. Some have been for fighting which I have no sympathy for. One team didn't show up for a game, and the other team drove an hour to their bar. No call, no show, no nothing. Granted it's a recreational league but when you waste someone else's time who could have been doing something else, that isn't right.

Yup. Didn't like it. Kid didn't really deserve it, but the owner of the company gave me the order. I didn't work there too much longer...

Yes, our engineers laptops kept disappearing at night so we set up a camera and caught one of my guys taking them on third shift. When I was shown the video and asked to get him and escort him to HR I was trying to figure out what he was doing:confused:. This guy was making 65k to 70k in GA. at the time. On the way to HR I just had to ask, was a $1200 laptop worth your 65k a year job?

    Yep,
Never a good thing, usually just reducing manpower as jobs wound down.
I have been on both sides so I know how it goes.

I run a valet company. It's funny how that is...I have guys that make really good money and to make an extra 20 dollars a night they decide to steal. Then I catch them and "oh man I needed gas" or "it's only $20." Seriously? I have fired a countless amount of guys. Shit I even fired my brother for crashing 3 cars in 3 weeks. I fired my cousin, the one who got me the job when I first started on New years eve. I told him, "hey, this way you can start off the new year with a fresh start." Still, It does suck when it's someone that for some reason they piss off the establishment. They have a wife and kids. That's when it's hard.

At the end of the day. They don't pay your bills. They would do the same if they were in your position. Business is business. It's hard!

I think laying people off would be harder.. I haven't layed anyone off yet. But I feel firing someone is their own fault. When I decide to fire someone I make sure they are firing themselves before I give them the ban-hammer.

Taking a mans lively-hood is never easy, even if they deserve it.

Yes, most times the employee has been given ample opportunity to make improvements, if they don't or won't take advantage of that opportunity, then its on them and not me.

One time it was for blatant unprofessional behavior that was completely unacceptable and there was no other option. Again it was on them not me.

I've had to fire lots of people.

If it isn't an immediate fire-able offense (theft, discrimination, payola, etc.) then usually the person gets at least one "call into the office" where it becomes immediately clear that their production/attitude/whatever is not up to the standards expected of that position. Usually they are put on a probation period where they are given a set of steps to complete and a time frame to show demonstrable improvement.

I don't feel it's fair to the employee to tell them they are not performing to standards and then not give them an opportunity to do so, nor to fail to tell them what those standards are in clearly defined terms.

Basically, if I want you to make XX widgets in 10 days, I expect XX widgets in 10 days with all the quality standards my company requires. If I want you to make $1M in sales over the course of the year, that's the minimum. $999K is not $1M.

Firing someone because you don't like their face or Janet in procurement doesn't get along with them isn't a good reason.

I used to be called the "Terminator" at my old job. I was relentless when I fired someone. I always felt a bit bad about it but to get fired from my old job you really, really, really had to be fucking up bad. So I got over it fast.

Same thing at my current job.......you really have to be a regular screw up to get canned. And if that's the case, I have no use for ya & no guilt at all.

Fired and been fired, it sucks.

I'm not in any postion now to fire anyone and that's okay. Where I'm working now it's pretty hard to get terminated. Unless you're an obvious thief or a felon you're not going anywhere.

Previous life I was the guy that reduced staff for either performace issues of the employee and or the company. Additionally, I was self employed for years owning a small company with a small group of employees, I was pretty easy unless the employee threatened the boss. That is the only reason I ever had to fire people then...

I have worked at a sailing summer camp in my area for the past 5-6 years. I started as a volunteer then got certified to actually teach then got promoted to the head instructor job. I had to "Fire" on of my volunteers for cussing in front of 7-8 year olds. I kinda felt bad but it was needed and none of the other workers liked him.

I just fired someone earlier today. Another one yesterday. If s person cannot contribute to the team to achieve common goals, they take away from them.
