Well I have a dumb question, do vehicles corrode/rust more being on island surrounded by salt water? Just wondered if that would be an issue there. I'm sure it isn't like our salt encrusted roads here in the rust belt though.

The way those trucks are washed/polished/cared for I don't think rust is an issue.

They don't salt the roads here, but the roads are salty from surf spray.
Especially on the north shores in the winter, when the waves are big , and the winds are onshore.
....then it rains and splashes up under yer Taco.

I'd trade ya if I could.
    It's -32 right now.
Went to the store yesterday and when I got back in Taco it wouldn't start.
Had to get a "boost" from a kind stranger.
Plugged in and tender on now but still a struggle to start.
Trying to stay warm by watching Sony Open Golf from Waialae.
    A hui hou

Time for a new battery? AGM? Or battery blanket? Both?

Have an appointment at dealer to have charging system and battery checked. Too cold to check things myself. My guess is battery is no good. Only 14 months old but original. Won't be getting agm because of charging worries from this forum and no battery blanket. Have factory block heater but doesn't help when battery keeps dying. Sorry for throwing this thread off line.

Could also try a battery tender to top up every so often on the new battery. May help this new one last longer and stay strong.
Weird that it went to crap so quickly on you! I never had any issues like that in Fairbanks AK where they get actual winter temps (-30 to -40c for prolonged periods, with spells of even colder weather). I wonder what caused that? Frustrating to say the least!

Ya I can't explain or understand it either. It was block heater plugged in. Strained to start to go to store and was totally dead when I got back in at store. Plugged in with block heater and also tender now but don't trust it. I'm thinking it was a battery not up to standard and cold weather was enough to kill a cell or more.

heading back to Maui, kihei in late June and early July. go every two years for a few weeks. stay in Kihei or Kaanapali when we go. went to the big Island last summer for a week and a change of pace north of kona. did some day trips to other areas, waterfalls, old abandoned mills converted to parks loved it all. then went over to Kihei for another 10 days. loved all the tacos and a few Tundras, not my style but the love they put into their trucks is amazing. I always enjoy talking builds with the locals.

Ya we used to go to Maui every year but went to Oahu this year instead. Feel so bad about Lahaina and did not want to add to disturbance. Maybe stay away from Kaanapali until housing and assistance gets better ? A hui hou.

yeah staying in Kihei but will take 1000 bypass to day trip to Napili and Kapalua beach areas and the blowholes. totally agree on respecting their losses and hope they can rebuild it would be a loss if Lahaina turned into Wailea or Kaanapali with little room for the Lahaina Town generational families.

FWIW my OEM battery lasted 6 years and was still turning over the engine just fine in -10 or so. I tested it and it was reading 12.3. We were expecting -35 the following week so I went to Costco and got to the land of the Kirk kind.

What part of Canada are you at?

In March 2019, I was taking a hike on the northwest side of Oahu and saw these guys.

Unfortunately the mods got me locked down such that I can only see my own posts. I’m trapped in an echo chamber of my own opinions.

Calgary. Minus 28 right now. Has been around -35 the last week or so. Almost too cold to snow but it still does. Supposed to get better or a little warmer this week. Stay safe and warm and dream of Hawaiian beaches with the unofficial state vehicle the Taco everywhere. A hui hou.
