Pioneer DEH-P4001HD DEH-P4000UB $180 shipped with accessories. Not going to be a permenant H/U. Just an interim unit until I can pick up a nicer GPS unit.

check your area for HD stations. Might not be worth your time searching for a HU that has it. .02

just installed a new HU with HD radio (http://mobile.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028466&pathId=142&page=1). Didn't get the radio because of HD, but it came built in. Selected this particular radio because of the front aux/usb inputs and the fact that I could change the color to match the orange color already in the tacoma. So far i'm very happy with the stereo, it alone has made my stock system sound much better. As far as the HD radio, can't say much about it. I haven't used it too much. It seems the only stations out here where i'm at are HD talk radio stations.

Being in Dallas, there is a wide selection of HD radio stations. So, I should be able to give you a good detail on if I notice any better clarity or anything. But, I don't have the most discerning ear when it comes to SQ as some others on here believe they have. :)

the larger metro areas will have a lot more HD stations. I only have a couple available to me in the Shreveport area. Not worth paying for the option if I can't use it most of the time.

I end up listening to Xm 98% of the time anywho.

I'd prefer XM or sirius, but since this unit was bundled together for no more additional cost, I figure I can give it a whirl and a review.

i thought about it, but the plug in for my stereo is a couple of bills, so i've passed to this point. we have a decent selection of stations here tho, so it might be worth it.

I've always had satellite radio in my vehicles since it came out.

This time with my new taco, I went HD radio.
My HU is HD READY so I had to buy the device for it ( hd300 ).. I installed it about 3 weeks ago. I listen to it 15% of the time... HOWEVER, this is because I have my entire iPod library on the go, as well as my entire Movie Library. I use the Radio 'adhoc' when I want to mix it up with local news for traffic etc... I "very very rarely" use my HD radio to listen to music, pretty much never.

The major question is: what is important to you, what do you want to hear and will you use the device. Truth is, with satellite you can pretty much listen to whatever whenever.. Sports, news, cnn, investments, espn, traffic, any genre of music etc..

I consider HD radio just a simple radio upgrade. Truth is with HD Radio that the shit comes in very clear, it sounds great. But only if you actually want to listen to radio.

the HD300 adapter device thingy for my HU ( jvc kdavx44 ) is a big device that isn't the easiest to find a home for. It is pretty well hidden, but if I didn't have it i'd be ok with that too. HD Radio is 2nd place to satellite because you are in fact limited to broadcasts in your area that happen to have HD broadcast.

XM and Sirius are equal to me. If you're not a howard stern snob, then either is fine. I can't tell the difference. ( all depends on how you use the device and what you like ).. but if you are into sports, music and random news stations then XM/Sirius away..

HD Radio is 3rd place. The major benefit is that it's "free" and will improve your radio quality to "friggin nice and clear" where available.

If I turn on my radio right now, it's for news/sports/talk NOT music.

Just finished up installing the new HU with HD radio tuner.

First off, I still like XM or Sirius, it all about the channel selection. Local stations just cannot compete with programming.

But, the point of this post is what I think of HD radio. This is the first time that I have heard HD radio. I must say that I am impressed with the sound quality. To me, it was pretty spot on to CD quality sound. Not MP3 CDs, but a true .WAV CD sound. When the signal would get weak the unit will switch to the older analoge signal. When this happens there is a night and day difference, to my ears.

I don't know that i would go out an purchase an HD unit instead of XM or Sirius, but not because of SQ. If you happen to really like a couple local stations or do not want to pay for sat radio each month, consider HD radio. Pretty slick for what it is.
