You may be "detained" for questioning, but not jailed. Im my experience, the resident was removed from the scene, interviewed and allowed to return home.

As was mentioned before, establish a relationship with a good attorney, for this and other family matters before anything happens......if you are involved in an "incident", make the attorney your second phone call (first is to 911).

Regarding phone calls, you or your wife should call 911 as soon as you suspect there is someone in your house........you will be kept on the line until the police show up and the call will be recorded by the 911 switchboard.......all in your favor if things get ugly.

Harden your residence with additional locks, better doors/windows, exterior lighting and a monitored alarm system. Check out wireless switches that allow you to control exterior and interior lighting from a control box by your bed......all in your favor if things get ugly.

Get a dog....any dog that barks will work.....my recommendation is a Rhodesian Ridgeback......great family dogs and protective.

A Claymore would be great, but the backblast is a real bitch, and you will have about a months worth of drywall patching to do and some burned carpet to replace.......besides, that will be a problem to explain to the cops.

    YMMV

I feel what your saying something you should do is take some kind of safety course to back ya up in court if ever ya find yours self in and one of the first things ya learn is if ya pull a gun its cuz ya going to use it and if ya fear for ur life which is what the law says about shooting someone ya shoot to kill and as I was told by officer try to shoot them in ur home and try to make sure you shoot them in the front only way you'll get any slack for a back shot i is if ya unload ur weapon because of shock .... Ya know where ya pull and pull do to fea And shock And the want recalled anything other Than fear..... Ot so i was told .... Hope that helps ya a bit if your not shooting to kill you'll have more to worry about than jail time.... My advise is if ya can hide and stay safe do so protection your family and only shoot if they are at risk everything else can be replace or recovered guns are great tools but can change ones life for ever once used ...... Some people buy them thinking they be safe by them and end up being killed by them...... So in short if ya don't have to pull it out don't and if ya do always shot to kill because it not a game .....

    Just my two pennys

Damn straight there is a sticker on every entry to our house,

"If you unlawfully enter these premises you will be shot"

    ^ Theres your warning.

If someone steps foot in my house without my welcoming, depending on the circumstances they will be shot.

I would go to jail in a heartbeat if it meant protecting my mother, father or my wife.

Rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6.....

Found this site because I was interested in what type of dog you were talking about:

"The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed developed in Southern Africa where it was used to hunt big lions. This is most likely why this dog is known for its bravery."

    holy hell!

I would be real careful on what type of defense weapon you purchase (and how it looks), what targets you shoot and what you post on social networking sites.........all of that can be used by an agressive attorney (or DA) to make his case for, or against any action taken..........

Also be weary of modding your weapon....

I remember reading about a case where someone put a lighter trigger on their glock and did some other cosmetic things and the PA tried to use it against him.

My modded gun is used for target only, I have a all stock for protection.

Also used by the Rhodesian army during the bush wars (1964-1979). great as scout and attack dogs.

Do you really want to hurt the guy breaking into your house by shooting rock salt, rubber bullets or bean bags at the MOFO? Fock that, shoot to kill, nothing less. All you will do is piss him off with toy bullets and when he gets out of prison eventually and he will, kiss your ass goodbye cuz he's gonna be pissed.

It's a fine line. Most cranksters that break into a house are just looking to get in and get something they can sell or trade for their next dose. The last thing they want to see is you standing there with a gun. So having lots of bright motion lights, big locks and a nasty dog will be a pretty good deterrent.

If you have all that stuff and someone still comes into your house, and doesn't run away when they see you there pointing a gun at them, then they are probably there to do more than steal stuff (ie hurt or kill you) and they need shooting.

If that's the case you need to make the split second decision to blast or not blast this person and then be able to very clearly articulate the factors that you considered before you pulled the trigger. If you smoke some drunk teenager who stumbled into your living room because he didn't leave when you told him you are in deep shit. If dude comes into the house with a weapon, or lays hands on you or your family he's probably fair game.

Bottom line, if there is someone in your house who needs to be shot, you want them to stop when you shoot them, not get bruised. My 1187 has 12 pellet 00 buck and slugs in the magazine.

    i live in california.

i have talked to a DA. he said, if i cannot get to a place of safety, i can kill the guy. but i had better be prepared to prove i was in danger.

i plan on remodeling my bedroom. i am going to put an exterior door with a deadbolt as my bedroom door. someone comes in, i lock down. he comes thru that door to my wife and i, i will kill him.
