So made a post already about having a misfire it just recently happened the other night. Went to start the truck this morning didn’t sound good. Took out spark plugs cylinder 1 had coolant. Cranked motor over and seems to be ok. Gonna attempt to do the head gasket myself. saw a write up on it. Any suggestions?

Well got no responses on last one. Didn’t think about changing the other one but oh well.

motor was rebuilt about 50k ago... it runs and has good power. Idle was slightly rough but I went snow wheeling yesterday and started the truck and it was stumbling slightly misfire but no code. Drove it home and check this morning to cylinder 1 coolant

    compression on all cylinders 185

    engine miles 327k

You are about to embark on a memorable journey.... Pay attention to the timing marks, don’t forget the backlash service bolt, buy a Toyota head gasket and a FelPro set for the miscellaneous. Use the FelPro head gasket as a scraper for old gasket then toss. As soon as you can see the cavernous and most certainly bottomless area the timing chain is dwelling in, cram it full of clean rags cuz you will absolutely drop something in there. It’s actually not bad once you get past the exhaust. Lot’s of awesome videos on YouTube. Have fun!

I had a few questions. One being once online up crank to 0 the timing on the cam shafts with the two dots and one dot. Do I then zip tie the chain where it is? Also for the cam shafts do they need to come out before the head?

Yes. Make sure the crank is on the 0 mark, the dots on the back of the cams are together, zip tie the chain to sprocket. INSTALL SERVICE BOLT in exhaust cam sprocket, Remove the bolt holding sprocket to intake cam, wiggle the sprocket and chain off (PS, remove tensioner device from the side of block) slowly loosen cam bearing caps equally then lift cams out, EQUALLY loosen the head bolts, a bit at a time, by following the torque chart available from Google. Good luck.

Is there a manual of this? Do I the same thing for the intake side? The service bolt?

Not sure had a shop adjust the valves for me. What do you recommend I do with the head once it’s off tell the machine shop to do?

look at the cylinder like a clock face

let me know where the head gasket failed......................directly to a coolant channel

    or maybe between cylinders

I just had my local head shop go through everything. They cleaned it, replaced the burnt valve, lapped, set the clearances, changed the valve stem guides and resurfaced it, then gave it back ready-to-install. Was $427 out the door (and they had a cash discount...)

Is there a bigger problem once I find where it failed?

Cool, yea first time doing a head gasket I am mechianlly inclined so I understand most. So Correct me if I’m wrong this is what needs to come off

exhaust manifold, exhaust, power steering pump, chain tensior, belt, spark plugs, valve cover, intake and exhaust cams, head bolts, egr in the back of head? Throttle body, Pully for the belt. Sure I’m missing some let me know

where it fails tells a story

always be deliberate on disassembly..........................few seldom are

    for example

spark plugs...............many times are pulled then jumbled

they should ALWAYS be kept in order !!!!!!!!!! always !!!!

U had posted many times b4 U mentioned it was #4

    could have saved U time & $$$$

What do you mean I mentioned it was #4? To be honest this motor was rebuilt, but I had no say before cause it was my dads truck. It also burns oil which may be valve guides? Runs strong so reason why I keep it
