I am looking at a 1999 4cyl 2.7L 5 speed 4x4 Xcab for sale and the dealer says the head gasket was replaced. Is this a reason for concern? Why would the head gasket blow on a Tacoma? My buddy said ask this question, I don't know enough to know if this is serious or not. The truck has 234,000 miles on it.

    Thanks for helping a newby.

Ya I wouldn't worry about the fact that the head gasket blew...moreso the fact that the dealer did the work  haha :D

Besides the Fact,if the the "dealer did it"...;) ask if they extended any warranty on their work or the parts...What was done beside the "gasket"??,did they do anything to the head when it was off???

Simple ??'s but will tell you a good story on that truck BEFORE you buy it...

    Ryan,

Good question. There isn't even a price on the truck and I'm just going to offer based on my assessment. But I'm surprised at the other prices I see. This '99 4x4 2.7L 4cyl manual has 234,000 miles, been rear-ended twice, busted headlight, cracked windshield, worn seats, broken arm rest, no owners manual. Sounds awful but I just want it to tow my boat. It still looks cool though with big tires on it and wind deflectors. Got a gut feeling on what I should offer?

Yes i drove it. Purrs like a kitten. Doesn't "seem" to have any issues although I don't think it was treated extremely well. Might take my chances if I can get a good price.

i wouldn't even think of paying more than 2k, do a carfax and see its history as well if its been passed around i would worry even more. But if it has only had a couple owners, and been decently taken care of it could last another good while.

I took it to a mechanic, no probs other than leaking oil pan gasket. Went back to the dealer offered $1,500 and they laughed me out of there. I said, "not even close?" and they said no and didn't even want to talk to me. There was some kid out there looking at it when I left. End of story.
