My 96 2.7l has a blown head gasket. The head is coming off and going to a machine shop. What all should I replace while it’s all torn down. I am thinking timing chain, water pump, radiator/hose. Is there anything else you guys would recommend to replace? And is there any particular place to get the parts at a fair price for a fair value? Thanks in advance!

    How many miles on it?

The timing chain may not be easy to replace. The repair manual says to remove the oil pan also to get the timing chain cover off. The chain should still be good unless you have super high miles, like over 300k.

Water pump can be changed out pretty easy by just removing belts, so you're not saving much time doing it at the same time as head.

You could get a head gasket kit from Toyota or somewhere else. Replace all the rubber parts: valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, PCV valve grommet, injectors o-rings/grommets. Consider replacing the small rubber coolant hoses under the throttle body/IAC valve/EGR valve while you have it apart. It all depends on how much time and money you want to invest.

Also, recheck the valve clearances after you put the head and cams back on. The machine shop may not reshim them correctly.

I second this post. Maybe change out the timing chain guides. Chain itself likely still meets spec.

Timing chain guides might be hard to do with timing chain cover on, but I can't remember.

It has 136k miles. I just want to get everything done now and not worry about any other issues for a long time. Side note, my mechanic “owes me one” and is doing all labor free of charge. All I’m buying is parts.
