I know many have had the reboot but this isn't that.

The last few days, the screen just goes black, like a laptop going
into sleep mode - is there a setting for this? It will do it once during
my 30 min. commute but not every time.

I've had it about 1.5 years now and this is a first for this. It's not
rebooting or really going to "sleep" as it's still on and working fine
and as soon as I touch the volume or the screen it comes right back.

    Any ideas?

Hey man, I actually had the same problem for a while, until I got on here and read some forums about it. Basically, Toyota released an update for it (or so I was told by my service tech). Next time you take it in, I would tell them about the issue as it is a known issue and have them perform the update. Mine seems to be functioning fine since they updated it. It has something to do with the USB charger/connector from what I was gathering...I do not know a whole lot about it other than there is an update.

Thanks man thought for sure this would be something we
could do ourselves but I am sitting in the truck right now looking
at the software update screen and it doesn't list any updates and
the update software button is showing as inactive meaning there
is nothing to update at this time.

Sounds like you just have your screen off. When you hit it and it lights up the lcd, there's a button right in the middle on the bottom that says screen off. Just toggle it back on and you should be good to go.

Bummer. But the sound stays on? Sounds like you need to go get the dealership to look at it. Maybe a short in the backlight? Will it ever come back on when you hit a bump or something?

That's the weird part, nothing stops working, music is going as it was,
when I notice it black, tapped the volume on the steering wheel and the
screen lit back up, sound never stopped.

And yeah, oil change coming soon so I'll let them know.

I had my radio replaced and they gave me a unit that would reboot 10 times a day and then got stuck in a frozen screen of the "warning" in the beginning of the reboot. Before I left the dealership with the "new" radio I had to turn around to have them order a new one... The advisor tried to give me a hard time because My video of it going through reboot didnt show the "whole" event of it shutting down. The manager finally came over and told them to order a new one. I think I got one of your refurbished units that was crappy and they are just putting them back out there. I think theres a short and its causing power issues and a reboot

The reboot issue is fixed. You can either mention it to your dealer who will update your software or occasionally one of our members here who is a tech is kind enough to pm the update.

Here we go again.... ive had my radio replaced 3x now. Probably about 30 days in the dealership thus far.
I picked her up this am with a specified new not refurbished radio, and have 30 days to report any issues back. This is just B.S. they kept telling me i was the only person with the issue etc and that a new radio should have fixed it blah blah blah.
For those having issues i highly reccomend asking the shop foreman/ shop manager for a new not refurbished unit. Hopefully that helps. For backstory look through my threads.

In all seriousness OP, I don't think Toyota is known for it's top-notch electronics. I had to put 3 radios in my 2nd gen as well. The 3rd gen doesn't like to pull up weather maps or read my texts sometimes.

Hey OP it happened to me the other day too... I think Toyota does firmware updates to the trucks via satellite or something ... wouldn't be surprised. I don't believe its coincidence... this just did it to me 2 days ago and it did it before another time and I looked at my firmware the first time and there was an update... don't know how they did it but it was done. The first time around ... got that black screen even with the radio on... just hit audio and it comes back on. There's an option somewhere in there you can turn the screen off ... so this has happened to me 2x at least ... it eventually will go away and today for me it didn't happen again.
