I kinda like it. But I'm a 70s and 80s kid. So I remember them in their heyday.

As for people bagging on their function? 75% of the mods I see on TW are bro-licious useless mods for the average mall crawler.

I say go for it.

I like them too, with the bed mounted spare set up.

OP depending on your age and martial status this might be a good mod for you! Although I agree with them being useless I see a lot of them in my area on dodge and chev’s, it’s a panty dropper mod. Truck sluts love them, if you’re trying to pull tail with your truck then it’s probably worth while.

Yeah man I say do it! You don’t hear people giving Toyota a hard time about a hood scoop that has no function…it just looks cool. So if you like it live it up!

I remember back in the 70-80 all truck owners had them roll bar. I did on my GMC 4x4 with the big bush lights on top lol. Today I don't see much of them anymore even up here where I live in the Logging community. To each their own just saying.

The function is so you can put something like lumber or a ladder or canoe overhanging the cab and not have it resting on the paint, and to have a way to tie it down

Ultimate mall crawler mod, pretty sure all the ones I see are just thin ass painted metal. Off road use only, not actually a protection device, show use only.

Those are called back racks, however most people by the mid height ones to protect the glass form 4 wheelers or whatever else they throw in there bed. I haven’t seen a ladder pitched up against a tall version in a long time. Probably because a 10 foot extension ladder in a 5 foot bed = 5 feet pointing up in the air, not safe / I don’t believe it’s legal in my area anymore.

BackaRack for the w. Hit all categories for me, looks good, rear window protection ( i haul my 4wheeler in the bed) and can strap things to it. Great setup with the bed mount it comes wit. Op if you like that thing go for it, ur truck.

Same in Kentucky. The price of my BackRack was less than the cost of replacing the rear window I broke after my muscles tired and I pitched a log thru the rear window. I moved it from the original truck (Frontier) to the Tacoma when I traded.

OP - go for it. Like others said, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone on here who hasn't done at least one mod that suits their personal preference. Hell, I put the KC M-Rack on with all the lights because I thought it looked cool, certainly not because I could use all the lights driving to the mall and back.

Its your truck, if you want it go for it, its not 100% useless if it makes you happy. Also like others said you could use it for loading and securing long items like a ladder, lumber, kayak etx

EDIT: It does appear the new Black Horse Off-Road bars are designed to work with tonneau covers, which is pretty awesome, but they definitely won't work with an OEM unit and I don't see how they'd work with a tri-fold unless you always lost 1/3 of the bed.

I swap my tonneau on and off during the winter.

N-Fab also used to make one that you might be able to find second hand. It was a thinner design originally for the SE Toyota Tacoma T-Force trucks. I had one of the earliest ones made outside of the T-Force trucks. They're a different design with thinner tubes. I thought it looked great on the Access Cab, but not on the Double Cab.

This is my old 2013 with the N-Fab thinner bar.

I briefly test fit it to my 2016 and didn't love it.

The Black Horse bar isn't particularly well-made at least compared to the N-Fab. Neither had any semblance of instructions on how to install them correctly.

That’s not functional, just a bad way to carry cargo. Would be far safer to carry that load with the tailgate down.

I dont really see how that is unsafe if tied properly. Having things hang off the tailgate can be a danger to those behind you in a stop-short situation.
Besides, ive seen people do both at the same time like this
