OP.......depends what you want to accomplish..... aesthetics or function.

Aesthetics (appearance), sure. It pulls your trigger.

Function. Not good for roll-over or cab intrusion, but it is a place to mount Off-road lights.

Your truck, your $$, your wants.

Totally disagree, add another removable bar towards the rear of the bed and you've got a solid framing in place for carrying large cargo. I use mine all the time for carrying kayaks and once I'm done I can just take the rear bar out and have my full truck bed back.

Also works great as a grab rail to pull yourself into the bed over the side.

I'm planning to attach a removable safari style rack for extra space on trips that I dont bring the kayaks. So 100% function for me.

Mine is a steel Apex adjustable rack from Discount Ramps. I had a local shop weld it all together. It works well.

Yes, a true headache rack similar to the Back Rack shown here is quite useful, even necessary for some. I am looking into the same right now. Between hauling motorcycles, four-wheelers, camping equipment, construction equipment, I have missed the headache rack I had on my previous GMC, and now I'm looking for the "right one" for my Tacoma. I don't want it to protrude above the cab quite as much as the Back Rack does.

Correct. In terms of economics it's called "utility". Personal satisfaction or enjoyment is also utility, just as much as the ability to DO SOMETHING with it.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.

Please tell me about this rack set up. The removable rear element and softopper acccomodation is an ideal setup for my needs.
