Hey guys, I’ve looked at this forum for help ever since I got my tocoma about 3 months. The truck is a 2005 2.7 manual 4wd with 300k miles
. I would like to get advice about my Tacoma and hear y’all’s thoughts if you’d like me to post a walkthrough. I got a Tacoma from a relative for free after a rock hit its radiator and it overheated and sat for about 2 months. I replaced the radiator myself and then drove it a couple hours to my home. About 3 minutes from my house It seemed to have lost coolant (check engine turned on but temp gauge was fine) and I truthfully tried to push it (early morning stupidity) to drive to my house . Well it blew white smoke from my exhuast and then would not restart but would turn over . Towed it to my house and have

I then assumed it had blown the headgasket, and with a boroscope visually confirmed it had coolant in cylinder 1 and the rest were dry. The motor seems to turn over well when I turn it with a wrench. I hope the block / head has not been cracked. Currently have everything but the head , camshafts and timing cover off. I have been working at it regularly for about 1.5 months . The weather is terrible in my area and I have to work on it outside so I don’t have much time to work on it. I would like to ask yall, how likely do u think the block is cracked? Do yall think the block/head/piston could have survived what was prolly about 1.5minutes or so of overheating? If the block is cracked is it feasible to have a machine shop repair it or must I replace the engine at that point? These engines are so expensive online and don’t seem to exist in junkyards . I will be out of town for weeks so won’t get to working on it again till late August/ September but I just wanted to hear y’all’s feedback , if I take off the head and I visually see it is only the headgasket then I will replace it and post a loose guide here with some advice for yall.

I would think if the block is cracked I wouldn’t repair it. Hope it’s just the gasket and use a straight edge to check that nothing warped (head or block), before putting head gasket back onz

I was planning on taking the head to be machined if it isn’t cracked too, it’s fairly affordable at my shop

It sounds like you're almost there so I'd pursue the HG replacement regardless what we think about the block. I have a 1GR and I knew I was losing coolant. I had a small leak for a few months -- then it did overheat driving over a mtn pass (near Cerro summit). White smoke. Tons of coolant loss. I let it cool and added more coolant. Slowly drove home. Verified coolant in cylinders 4 and 6. Replaced the HG and all is good now 2k miles later. I'd cross my fingers and press on :)

Thanks for adding your experience. The biggest obstacle besides time for this has just been finding internet guides! Never thought id actually need one of those Haynes manuals till this job.
