Snow rated skinny tires. Cut through the snow and hits the pavement and go slow when the white stuff hits.

Falken Wildpeak AT3/W are an excellent all-terrain tire in the snow, but there is no replacement for a true snow tire.

I had wildpeaks on my Tacoma for 2 winters, the third winter I put blizzaks on it. With the blizzaks there were honestly very few times that I really needed 4wd, where with the falkens I would put it in 4Hi as soon as the roads were covered.

Some people swear by studded tires, but I've never really felt the need. It's usually more snow than icy roads, plus they use so much salt it's ludicrous.

I would advise purchasing the tires in NY as you can keep the service nearby your son's. If the tires needed attention, he can head to his shop nearby.

If purchasing tires in TX, I would advise purchasing from a online seller like @Discount Tire direct. Even with the relocation to NY, your son will have reliable service if he needs it during the school year(s).

This is very true. A winter/snow tire will always beat a A/T, along with skill/caution driving. It's main purpose is to get you through the winter season, whereas a A/T can do a little of everything.

    The best advice by far.
