If you leave your headlights turned in the "on" position why on some occasions do the lights turn "OFF" when you turn the car off and other times the lights stay "on" even thought the car is turned off?

If the lights are on and the car is running, when you shut off the car, the headlights will stay on til you open the door then will go off. If the car is off and you turn the lights on, they'll stay on.
