Headlights in the snow

Doesn't mean they are correct. if people are flashing you, they are aimed to high.

 

Mine were aimed too high from the factory. I was getting flashed as soon as I headed home from the dealer that night I bought it. I also notice a lot of Tacoma's with headlights aimed high, lifted or not.

 

That song makes a little more sense now that I see it in written form. I always thought he was saying "Wrapped up like a douche".

 

Most people do..that's what it sounds like, really.

 

No one else seems to have the same problem so I guess mine I just out of adjustment

...^^^... Been in a couple of "white outs" on the ground and nothing works until the snow slows down. You can see ZERO outside.

 

I've been in some super dense coastal fog that's the same way. Amber will give you more contrast in these conditions.

 

As mentioned, they could be aimed wrong from the factory. Also, with the weak Taco leaf springs, if you have weight in the bed your lights will angle upward.

 

I drive a lot in heavy snow. With low beams I can see well enough to drive at a safe and prudent speed (any old Montanans will appreciate the "safe and prudent" part).

I agree that blue/super white bulbs are bad in fog & snow, and that fog/yellow bulbs should help.

I would, however, avoid higher wattage bulbs (e.g., HELLA 130/100W Yellow Star) unless you also upgrade the wiring harness. The OEM harness isn't designed for anything above ~70W, and may overheat.

 

I run 100/80 bulbs and cleared with with my father-in-law (electrician and general handy fella). He said that if you're doubling the wattage on those bulbs you'll be fine - the only thing you may do is melt the headlight but you're not going to start a fire or anything. I took it with a grain of salt and got the 100/80 over the 130/100's.

My headlights are around 3500k and the fog lights 3000k. I like that old school colour - better contrast.

 

So to recap:

Get amber fog lights, only use low beams in white out conditions, and re-aim your headlights, so the on coming drivers won't be blinded by the lights, causing them to get wrapped up like a douche, and ultimately end up as another rumor in the night.

 

The only problem with LED lights in the snow is that they don't heat up enough to melt to snow off of them. I have PIAA LP530s (with amber Lamin-X) mounted in my 13 and actually have to stop every once in a while to clear them off. If you have factory fogs I'd definitely run the yellow bulbs.

 

Do you have your fogs on while driving in traffic?
You will and should get flashed.

 

During whiteout conditions I just use the running lights so others can see me. Headlights off.

 

On an old outfit, I ran both the amber and later, the "white" bulbs - there wasn't a measurable (or noticeable to the driver) difference in vision when the weather was difficult (fog or whiteout). Nothing on my truck says the lower valence bulbs are "fog" lights - and rightly so, they are way too high off the ground to perform that function. At 25 inches to the center (dead stock), they are high enough off the ground to be "headlights" in the state of Arizona (and you are allowed four headlights). I finally just put the H9 headlight bulbs in them - and rigged the switch to full manual so they can be chosen for use on backroads or offroad.
