Heat sensor plug on 04 Tacoma

    2004 tacoma 4WD
    Greetings, A packrat chewed through 2 wires connecting to the heat sensor plug.
    Thought I could do a quick fix by reconnecting the wires. Electrical tape etc.
    If the wires were crossed,would that damage the plug?
    If so, are aftermarket sensor plugs OK or should it be Toyota?
    Any advice appreciated
