    Hi folks,

For the most part I am happy with my Lomax tonneau cover on my 2021 Tacoma, but it gets extremely hot in the direct sun, both on the top and bottom of the cover.

I recently purchased a Coleman cooler that was measured to fit right under it with an inch or two to spare, but I'm worried the plastic might melt or the lid could warp.

Does anyone have this kind of issue, and if so, what's the best way to solve it? I was thinking of putting either a heat resistant rubbery style mat on the top of the cooler during transport, like one of those oven mitt type materials I can't remember the name of.

Or possible just a towel to diffuse the heat a bit?

    Thanks everyone!

Yeah, a large beach towel, folded and the place over the cooler would help it.

Doesn't matter the type of cover you have, it's gonna get hot under it and especially if the bed isn't well vented. I've never seen a well vented bed unless there's no cover or the cover is opened up. I doubt it will melt the cooler. A towel as said or you could get some kind of aluminized insulated material to put between the cooler and cover. I have some of this stuff I cut and put on my motorcycle seats if they sit in the sun.

I doubt the cooler will melt or warp, but it damn sure will degrade its ability to keep contents cool for long periods of time. the hardware store has some type of aluminum foil sheet with a foam core that’s pretty thin, light, and cheap.
Just what’s gonna happen with black material, no vents, left in the sun.

Yeah, I figured there wasn't a ton(neau) I could do for the general heat in the bed under the cap, but I figured it would be nice to keep that scorching direct aluminum cover heat off of the plastic. it's too hot to even hold my hand on it, so I thought it wouldn't be great for the cooler or it's contents.

When I'm driving I can always keep the bed open with the cooler, I was just thinking more along the lines of once we're done tailgating or whatever and it's time to go into watch a game, I would definitely prefer it stays secure under a locked cover.

You could always rig up some sort of small 12V fan with a little solar panel, not sure it would be able to actually vent,,,, might turn it more or less in to a convection oven haha!

I have an aluminum (reflective) Diamondback cover and it seals very well and I made the mistake of running my fridge, strapped down, under there on a trip and when I opened the back a heat wave hit me and I'm surprised that nothing in there melted...plus the fridge didn't keep anything very cold.

    Soooo...there's that...

With the 100+ degree temps lately I can't even handle some gear I keep in the bed of the truck if it's been sitting there under the cover for some time.

You can put a piece of foil faced rigid foam board insulation on top of the cooler.

Go to your local home improvement store for a look if you aren't familiar with the material, it comes in a variety of thicknesses.

Obviously the thicker the better for blocking heat, you can stack thinner material for more thickness - a few dots of hot glue will hold the stack together.

I recently drove across the country (it was hot) and had a Yeti cooler in the bed under my Lomax cover, and granted its probably more burly than a Coleman, I didn't have any issues and most of my ice was still ice after 2 days.
