When I bought my truck. One of the questions was about heavy duty brakes. What would I have got if I said yes? I think I regret my choice.

    Semi-Metallic pads

The only 2 brake options offered from Toyota, that I know of, were Semi-metallic or ceramic brake pads.

Never heard of any such thing on 2nd gen Tacoma's.

The brakes essentially come in 3 configurations:
5 lug 2wd trucks have single piston calipers in the front and smaller drums in the rear with a vacuum brake booster.
6 lug Pre-Runners and 4wd trucks have 4 piston front calipers and larger rear drums with a vacuum or hydraulic brake booster.

There is no heavy duty braking option that I'm aware of.

Now on replacement brake parts you can get different pad materials that have various advantages and disadvantages.
