I'm experiencing heavy vibrations between 2nd and 3rd gear, and a delay in shift from 3rd to 4th... Plus a weird chirp coming from the front of the truck. Anyone have any ideas? If it's the transmission, is there a recall for something like this that toyota will fix for free? Nervous because I just moved out and have a ton of bills to pay, don't need another one coming

Yup, check your ujoints. Most shops would fix it for about 100 bucks or so

Just curious as to how it's the u joints if the vibrations stop when I release the accelerator?

    I'll give it a shot....

When you're accelerating - the driveshaft and/or pinion (at the rear diff) pivots upwards due to the torque. This is why Ujoints exist - because there is constant movement in the driveshaft as you drive. When you release the accelerator - the driveshaft / pinion drops.

Depending on the extent of the Ujoint failure - you can get all sorts of different symptoms at different times.

You should crawl under the truck and inspect the Ujoints for obvious wear. When was the last time your driveshaft was lubricated? If you can't remember....lubricate the ujoints NOW. You'll know soon enough after lubricating them, if you hit the bullseye. Its all a part of troubleshooting.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the 4 cylinder regular cab Ujoints have zerk fittings. If there aren't just see if there is any play at all in any of the ujoints. If there is, that's you're problem.

...the good news is this is a cheap fix at a local mechanic...and some will tell you easy to do yourself (but a little much for me, personally).
