You know, the asymmetrical mounting style is growing on me now... I might just have to do that when I eventually get my Pro Grille!

Also that Mobtown recovery bumper... I thought there was supposed to be a hitch in the center!?! It looks AWESOME without it. Still haven't decided whether I'm gonna do a brush guard or light bar on the front of mine.

Yours do sound better. But honestly I'm at a loss as to what my issue is. I tested the grounds and there's for sure continuity, hot leads are good, and the brackets are tight. The only thing I can think that I did different is put a split washer in with with the bolt to make it lock down...

Honestly the more I listen it sounds like you might have a defective horn, or you wired it wrong (series) like I drew up a few posts ago. But you said they both sound right isolated!?! This one has me stumped for real.

Ain't no Prius I've ever heard that sounds like that. These things are loud as heck & pretty piercing. It's not just the Pure dB either, the tone to it has a lot to do with the attention it grabs.

Yeah, I isolated them both and they sounded alright individually. They're for sure not wired in series, I double checked that. This may be one of those instances where I just have to let it be. It's still loud and piercing as yours sounded, just bad tone.

I just remembered I have a second set I was gonna give as a gift to my old man. Let me swap the sets and see if it's any different.

Here it is with two differences:
    1) Swapped out the horns for a different pair of Sharptones
    2) Took my phone out of the Lifeproof case

I think it sounds notably better than before. Not quite as good as yours, but better than the first set I tried.

I cut off the factory plug and spliced in a few short lengths of wire with spade connectors directly to the horns.

the harness that you made looks kind of similar to this:

do you think I could order this harness to avoid making my own?

Thanks LOL, I left mine in the stock position because I did want two different size bolts holding up the bracket. Once you get the Pro Grill, those horns will definitely pop.

I have the hitch receiver, but haven't cut a hole behind the grill. I asked them to recess the receiver because I didn't want a big square shown. But you can also purchase the recovery bar without the receiver.

If I had to choose from what I know now, I wish I got a CBI front bumper. If you plan on doing any offroading, then you will need a high clearance bumper. The OEM front protrudes so far out.

That would probably work just fine! The only thing you'd have to worry about would be the length, too short or awkwardly long. That's sort of what I was going for when I made my own. I'll have to make another if/when I do offset mounting behind a pro grille.

Maybe if there's enough of a demand I could throw together some Tacoma specific harnesses.

Yeah well, I'm in a 4x2 with the 2.7... a CBI bumper is probably pretty heavy for me. My offroading is more like "service roads and easier trails" occasionally with dirt bikes in the back. I just think it might be nice to have some better recovery points in case I do end up spinning my wheels.

Hey Gents. I've been looking at these for awhile.
In real world driving do you feel people notice these more?
I drive a car to work and have straight layed on it for like a mile once and the guy next to me never even looked over.
I have had a few times where I needed to get the other drivers attention as the were changing lanes into me ext and I don't think a single one of them has ever heard the horn on my car.

Honestly, if I were to be honked at with one of these on a tacoma, I'd be looking for the ricer in the next lane or a bumblebee..not a truck.

IMO, I'm more than sure if you wanted to grab some attention in your truck and expect people to know it's coming from a truck then you could keep the stock horn, as it works just fine, or hook up some train horns something more manly than a piercing beep.

I find they do a much better job of grabbing attention. Their sound carries a lot further down the road. It's hard to describe well, but it's a more piercing sound too. I do not like to be in front of mine when they beep, that's for damn sure. Both other drivers and animals seem to pay more attention, further out. As such, I've put some variant of them on every single car I have owned.

If you wanna get into the hard science, they're 7dB louder than stock horns, which equates to 162% of the volume:

Also, you'll notice that when people design sirens, they don't argue about what sounds the most "manly," they work on what is a sharp, easily distinguished sound that carries well and is easy to locate in terms of directional sound- that is, having a more instantaneous idea WHERE this beep/siren is coming from. Heck, even train horns use the same tones that these Sharptones do (415 / 350 Hz) BECAUSE those tones are so good at carrying far. Trains supplement it with 2-3 more additional tones, though, which is what gives the distinct train sound.

I am trying out a pair of each. Hopefully the Freq's of the Supertones (500/300Hz) will blend well with the Sharptones.
