Worked ok. Ground wire was a bit short, so I mounted the relay to a horn mount which was also a ground- you can see it in the pic. This left a lot of slack in the main harness I ended up zip tieing to the side.

One question. Are you using these in conjunction with the stock horn or did you disconnect the stock ones and just run these

I removed the 2 stock horns, added 2 sets of hella supertones, and a secondary harness/relay to power them.

    None (yet)
Anyone do this and keep the factory horns? Where do you wire the relay trigger for the hella horns if you were going to do this?

Just tap off the stock horn to activate new horn relay. If you're only running 1 additional HELLA, might even be able to tie off the stock horn in parallel.

P.S...this is how loud 2 pairs of HELLAS are:eek:

I read the comments on not needing a relay with the sharp tones. I just bought the supertones. Someone mentioned somewhere that the draw on the supertones are 12A and the horn is fused at 10. I have no idea how to install the relay. is this necessary? I'm assuming that if the draw is 2A more than the fuse it will just blow the fuse? Can someone give me a little help on getting this horn installed?

You'll need the relay with the supertones.

I thank you and very much appreciate this detailed write-up. I just received the Hella Sharptones (one set) and would like to install them this weekend on my '17 TRDOR. Based on your post, I don't think I need a relay. My question is, can I just install them with the facory wiring soldered/wire nutted to the OEM wires and mounted in the factory locations to your knowledge? You say that users report increased volume with the grounding mod. Where did you buy your extra materials? I haven't inspected the factory horns other than a quick visual when I was painting the grille. Do you assess that the TRD trim level horn setup will effectively ground the Hella horns to the level your mod does? THANKS

Weird, not finding that when I search under horn or Hella.

Thanks for the writeup! I have a TRD and got a little lost in the SR writeup. All i had to do was create ground wires for each horn and run them to where the battery grounds to the chassis.

These things sound pretty funny but they're loud.

Installed a sharptone kit today. I did a test by running a negative to the bolt that mounts the horn to the chassis and all the way to the negative of the battery and notices a small difference but not enough really care. Ended up grounding off the horn bolts. I snipped the original horn connection off and used a butt connection like another member on this thread mentioned and it worked great.

I still have my 2000 Tacoma with Supertones in them so I'll try and get a side by side if I don't sell it first

I know this is a 3rd gen thread... but a few other 2nd gens have posted, and I'm sure someone will search it and find it...

Just did this on my '15 4x4 Sport - Super easy. Used the stock wiring harness for power, just plugged them onto the prongs and made a "y" ground harness to connect the two grounds to the main battery ground. I did have to clock the one horn about 90 degrees on the mounting bracket so the power/ground prongs faced each other on the two horns, and had to slightly rotate the right horn to clear the left one.

Went in head first after monitoring this thread and got a set of the Supertone and Sharptones along with a beefy Hella relay to assure over-engineering.

Main problem is that I am a bit concerned/high-anxiety of any negative repercussions with a bad wiring job on my part so I was hoping to find some guidance on Tacomaworld with the wiring on this one.
I have some experience on my 2000 Tacoma with Hella lights triggered off of the high beams but for some reason I am drawing a blank with the Hella relay I picked up along with which route to take wiring the whole system up.

Impressed with mesojdm's wiring and PM'ed him as well. Was thinking the forum's answers might help others in the future with their mods so here goes:

    Truck
    :
    - 2017 TRD Off Road

Option 1: Run the Sharptones off of OEM horn wire #1 and #2, run the Supertones off of horn wire #2 via relay
Option 2: Run both Sharptones off of OEM horn wire #1 via relay, terminate horn wire #2

    Do these look correct?

And more importantly....does one of the options below look more correct/better?

Diagrams labeled with what I THINK are the right relay pins....

    Diagram Option 1:

    Diagram Option 2:

Relay is below - looking for sanity check on my wiring diagram references with the Hella relay.

Any and all help, guidance and slaps in face over bad wiring much appreciated.

Wiring question solved - the diagrams above proved out to be accurate.

The Hella relay is a switching deal that has power to 87a all the time and kicks over to 87 when trigger is thrown.

Really appreciate the TacomaWorld community and all the stuff that you can learn from the forums. Will try to remember to get pics of the process once I start wiring up things.
