    Greetings everyone,

I'm a husband and father from South Carolina. My wife and I have been talking about getting a new vehicle for about 2 years, and have at last decided on the 2016 Tacoma. 4x4 is a must for us.

After a few days of looking at info on the Tacomas and trying to read through the massive amount of information on this site (awesome) I stopped by my local dealer for some pricing last night. The dealer didn't have what I wanted on the lot, no worries. They searched and located what I want coming in a future delivery that works for me. So I asked for some pricing and cut to the chase info that I could walk out the door with. I flat out told them no to the "best offer but good only today with a deposit" pitch. They gave up on that quickly and the offer is good when I go back next week.

I wondered if some of you who are obviously very well versed on the Tocoma would take a look at the numbers they gave me and give me your opinions. In the end I asked for a price, they printed off a quick window sticker and worksheet with final costs, and I walked out with a "Thanks guys, sounds good and I'll be back". So here we go:

    Series: 2016 Tacoma 4x4
    Model: 7544 - 4x4 TRD Off-Road Double Cab V6 (6 Spd Auto)
Quicksand Ext. Graphite w/ Gun Metal Int.

Manuf. Delv, Proc, & Hndlg: $935

    TOTAL: $39,213

    Options Installed:

    PREMIUM & TECHNOLOGY PACKAGE $2,330
(Double Cab) Front dual zone climate control w/individual temp control, heated front seats, rear parking sonar, blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert (replaces chrome bumper w/ color keyed on TRD Off-Road grade). Auto-headlamps, and moonroof.

    V6 TOW PACKAGE $650

So, ballpark good or do I need to start negotiating?

Thanks in advance for the advice and thank you for all of the information y'all have been putting on this forum for guys like me to read through!

    Welcome to TW.

That price sounds decent but, I'd look for invoice, less hold back, less finance hold back, less incentive (factory to dealer and or factory to you) + a profit price. There is a thread on here showing actual cost.

And I didn't see that you posted it but, if there's a trade in, do the deals (at least for setting the deal up) as two different steps...a $ for the trade and a $ amout for the purchase.

BTW, in most cases, if the offer is good today, it will be good tomorrow.

And on a dealer trade the dealer you're buying from will not get the hold back on the unit you buy but, only from the unit they send to the other dealer...so some $ delta may exist.

    Thanks Joe,

I do have a trade in, but I didn't mention it to them. I went to carmax for a quick estimate and got an offer of $7000 on my current vehicle. (I was looking for $5000 so I am pretty pleased with that). I plan to tell them I want the $7000 or they can sit on the deal until I get the car sold or give it to carmax. That's been a solid bargaining chip in the past.

I was looking for dealer invoice info on here as I saw others mention it in pricing. Searches have flooded me with results that I have been digging through without really knowing what I am looking at. :)

    Thanks!

[QUOTE="BTW, hold back on sale is 2% and 1% on finance.[/QUOTE]

Thank you yet again Joe. You're a pal.

Pardon my complete ignorance here, but you said hold back is 2% and 1% on finance? Can you explain what that means? Thanks again for the quick answers and for sharing your knowledge. It's much appreciated!

    No problem man.

Holdback is money the manufacture refunds or gives back to the dealer upon sale. The sale on Toyota products gets the dealer a 2% refund (of invoice) and if they get you to finance through TFS they get an additional 1%.

Some bull that I didn't really think through until you mentioned it. I associated it with closing a loan... something I obviously didn't do and would not be a part of this invoice. I can only assume it's a few the dealer tacked on and hoped people like me would glance over it without thinking. Lucky for me I learned to surround myself with people who are much smarter than I am. Thanks!

Question is... Is this something everyone generally sees, or is this something I go after when I head back to the dealership. I want to pick my battles carefully. I also understand they need to make a profit... I just don't want them to make all of their profit from me.

Agree. They sneak a ton of fees in at closing. This is just another way to pad their pocket. Mine did it too and I caught it. Just be careful, they are making money selling the truck, trust me, without all the extra fees.

So tonight I sat down with the invoice info and did some high school math (which means I probably got it wrong).

    Looking at the numbers:

ITEM / Dealer Invoice / MSRP
    Base / $31,249 / $33,730
    Options / $ 3,381 / $ 3959
    Delv, proc, handle / $ 935 / $ 935
    Dealer fees / $ 0 / $ 598

    Total ----------------- $35,565 ------- $39,213

Assuming the dealer will get 2% ($711.30) back upon sale of the truck the total dealer invoice is $34,853.

    MSRP - 39,213
    DL INVOICE - 34,853.70 (After 2% back)
    DL OFFER - 34,624

That means the dealers offer is $229.70 below dealer invoice??

Once I go to the balance sheet and add on the taxes and fees I get this:

    DL OFFER - $34,624
    Tax - $ 300
    Dealer fee - $ 589
    E-Filing - $ 25
    Registration - $ 51

    BALANCE - $35,589

So if I pay 35,589 for the truck and the dealer paid 34,853 for the truck, that's $736 for them.

I am either getting this ALL wrong or the dealer makes money 20 ways other than selling the truck (I understand that's true but still....).

Any thoughts? (And thanks for reading)
