Just picked up my first pick up ever last night. It was a 2010 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab, 4 cylinder, 4x4, manual. I absolutely love it. I was first looking at regular cabs but the fiancee pushed for an AC and she was right.

Two first questions come to mind after having it and reading through posts and the manual. First, I want a cover for it. The dealership wanted $550 for a Truxedo ProLo Q or whatever. A friend has this type cover on his F-150 and it is great (no cross bars, rolls easily, velcros nice and snug, weather resistant, etc.). However $550 is out of my budget and frankly, I want it down to half that. After looking around I realize two things: 1) They are all really expensive and 2) It is hard to tell what will work with the tie down racks that come with the Tacomas. I saw that truckaccessories.com (I think) has a discount on the Truxedo cover to $340. Is this about the cheapest? The Truxport would work for me I think but it doesn't show as available for the tacoma. Any tips are appreciated.

Second, the Auto LSD/TRAC/VSC is confusing in the manual, and seems to be different than the posts on here. I read through a dozen or so posts but it all seems somewhat conflicted. The manual says that pushing the VSC off (car swerving icon) button in 2WD mode will turn off VSC, but not TRAC. And then it continues and says holding for 3 seconds will turn both off and activate the Auto LSD. Is this still in 2WD only? For me, this would be easiest in a scenario explanation. Am I correct in saying:
If I am driving on dry pavement, leave everything alone
If I am driving on wet pavement, leave everything alone, this is where the TRAC and VSC shine
If I am driving on snow, I can put it in 4WD depending on depth and speed (under 40 mph?)
If I get stuck and have a wheel spinning (in 2WD or 4HI), hold VSC off button for three seconds and then an LSD via brakes will engage all the tires
If I do the yellow wire mod, I can also do the above in 4LO

Does that sound about right? I had been research about a month on here prior to purchase and thought I had it figured out but the manual confused the crap out of me. Thanks and sorry for the long post!!

    Welcome aboard.... from Maryland

I'm not sure about the LSD/TRAC/VSC thing. I have yet to be able to test those functions.
Others on here should be able to comment correctly.
But what you posted sounds right.

Matoaka, that would be awesome if it only cost that much from the dealer, but they said it is $500 for the product, $550 installed. I'm hoping to get it closer to $300, and like I said I know that there is some special for $340, but I just want to double check on here.

Helifreek, thanks for the help, I do hope that someone can set me straight since it seems to be the most complicated question brought up to everyone!!

Welcome, from another Bozemanite. Here is something I saw on craigslist, might be exactly what you need. http://montana.craigslist.org/pts/1883880834.html

I have one just like you are taking about and it is very nice. Got mine locally off craigslist for $150. Easy to put on.

Thanks Bobcat and good to meet ya! I think that one on Craigslist is for the short bed since it is a double cab. I'll keep my eyes on there though, maybe that will work out.
