Yo from HI maui! Newbie to the forums. I got a 96 3.4 4x4 manual 190000 miles I just picked up from my friend. It might need a engine rebuild or a new clutch/TO bearing and flywheel. It's making a noticeable tapping noise from the passenger side of the engine and louder if u go underneath. It's not that loud but its enough to question it. I just did a valve cover gasket replacement, new alternator and oil change. Not sure if I caused the tapping or if the truck was already tapping. But I'll do some research here. I use to be active in srtforums.com so I kind of know my way around a forum.

    :worthless:

The tapping noise is coming from a midget stuck in your Glove Box. Toyota just puts them In Their for the fun it.

Does the "tapping" sound like a cricket chirping? Does it go away when the clutch is pressed? If so then it's your throwout bearing, nothing wrong with the engine. The TOB is a simple and cheap part but it's a pain to replace, basically have to do a clutch job so most people just replace the clutch while they're at it. Welcome :)

Tapping is always there even with clutch pressed in. Noticeable during idle when warmed up. Cold start tapping isn't there. When rpms go up, can't really hear I'm thinking because normal engine noise floods tapping.
