    Hello,

I recently just bought a brand new 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road, and while I enjoy it, I have a few qualms with it. I've never owned a truck before so this is a whole new experience for me.

    My first qualm is.
    1. The steering wheel audio button (left side) with the volume being left/right and the track selection being up/down, to me this is dumb. I hate it. Is there a tutorial to turn the buttons and switch the wiring to change this to be volume (up/down) and tracks (left/right)?
    2. Man do I hate that the steering wheel only telescopes like 2 inches out/in. I cannot find a comfortable position to the steering wheel without my seat being too far in and having to bend me knees.
    3. Can anyone hear the BSM audible sound? I can't, barely even with the radio off.
For #2, I did do a search but couldn't find anything remotely helpful.

I didn't believe there is an audible sound with BSM. Only with the parking sensors in the back while in reverse.

The steering wheel controls match the head unit....your volume bar goes left to right and your channel list goes up and down

Coming from a 2015 Lexus IS where both volume and truck buttons are up/down, I noticed this too but got used to it after a few weeks and it became second nature. It's just about getting used to it. I don't think you'll want to get in there and tinker with any wires (if it's even possible).

As far as #3, I have the OR with premium tech package and I don't have any sound for BSM... Neither did my Lexus. It's simply a light that you should see when you look in the mirror before changing lanes. To me, this may be a safety feature actually to discourage drivers from relying on a sound when changing lanes and actually get them to lean forward and check their blind spot every time. I'm thankful for this.

    1. Just get used to it.
    2. Nothing you can do about it.
    3. There is not supposed to be a sound.

Do you need to know, or care?
Wondering on #3, do you mean the cross-traffic alert sound? That one is barely audible, but the rear object avoidance one is loud in my truck.

#1 and #2 is what it is. I have no issues.

Welcome to TW. Be prepared there are several people on any forum that can be hard on new comers with questions and comments that are common and since this site is huge you will be hearing from them. However...

    1. you're not the first person to complain about the steering wheel radio controls and there does not seem to be anything you can do about it. You will get used to it though.

    2. It is what it is.

    3. found this on page 240 of the manual.
■Rear Cross Traffic Alert buzzer hearing Rear Cross Traffic Alert function may be difficult to hear over noises such as high audio volume.
I can here it fine and if you're checking you mirrors (you are checking your mirrors right?) the warning light is clearly visible. I have hearing loss almost to the point of almost needing hearing aids and I can hear it with the radio on.

    Welcome to TW!

I highly recommend test driving a vehicle before purchase and note all positives & negatives and live/enjoy the outcome, it may make life more enjoyable.

    Cheers!

Rear Cross Traffic Alert is not the same as BSM. BSM makes no sound - just flashes the light. Used for when you're on the highway switching lanes.

It seems to me that when I am pulling out from a parallel parking spot I hear it...I guess that is the rear cross traffic alert working.

    My bad.

Yea, Rear cross traffic will beep when someone is approaching while you're in reverse. If you're backing out of a head first parking spot, and someone comes down the road, it'll beep to let you know there's traffic approaching that you might not be able to see yet. Never thought I needed it but find it very useful now. And the parking sensors beep when you get close to objects. BSM just blinks.

Yea, I see no reason to turn it off. Maybe if you're towing something it'd get annoying?

    Wow tons of replies.

    1. Ok I will get use to it
    2. This really sucks for a $40k truck, period.
    3. I guess I read the manual wrong when it stated the following on page 239:
Coming from a fully loaded Mazda6, it had a rapid BSM audible sound which I loved.

    3. the original post says BSM. The manual you are quoting is for the Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Two diff things.
