I found no issues with the Automatic. It's no more or less annoying than the 6 speed in our 2016 RAV4.

One thing I'm doing right away... get the AJT key fob case. The Toyota fob is really light and feels like it will smash the first time you drop it.

The truck isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. The throttle response could be better. Transmission shifting, yeah.

Some people hate it, I don't worry about it. It's just a pickup truck and for the most part does the job of a light weight truck just fine. Go drive and decide if you are going to let it bother you enough to buy something else.

Yes you could get a manual if you prefer . If I knew Tacoma had so many issues on auto trans I would have bought manual, but since I found vf tuner at 100,000 miles I fell back in love with my truck. Auto trans shifts smooth and great power especially in running 285/75/16 km3 10ply

I also should have said that I have owned a Gen 1 and now have a 2020 Pro - both automatics. I grew up learning to drive manual transmission and still have a '96 Z3 that I love to throw around the corners. The ATs on both my trucks were great - my 2020 had the TSB done when I took it in for service but, honestly, it was fine before and maybe a bit better after. Enjoy your truck!!

Every vehicle available for purchase is going to have something about it that annoys the shit out of the owner. Some people care more than others.

I pay attention to the quirks of my vehicles, as I spend a lot of time in them.

There is only one way to find out if you like or not, and that is to conduct a diligent test drive of the model you want.

People on this forum aren't "fantastical" about issues with their truck, they are investigating the characteristics of the vehicle to explore the possibilities of change or improvement. Facts are facts, the truck drives a certain way, and that varies slightly based on the weight and wheelbase of the model you choose.

Whether you like it or not can only be resolved by putting some miles on in a Tacoma. Maybe rent one if you want an extended test period.

Nothing wrong with the auto transmission in my 2020 v6 tacoma either. If you drive the truck normal from the start you shouldn't have anything to complain about. I'm beginning to think more, and more its owners that use the ECT and S modes all the time when they likely not need to, create their own issues as the transmission in these trucks are the learning type that store the driver's habits.

I had older toyota compact 4x4 pickups with automatics, and they reminded of hydrostatic type transmissions a lot different from what the gen3 tacoma has today, so do not expect them to perform quite the same. These new transmissions are more efficient to deliver more mpg.

Agreed! While the transmission is learning how you drive, drivers should learn transmission charactoristics. Persnally Quite pleased with mine.

    Congrats on your new Tacoma.

Had a 2019 TRD OR Auto. Transmission never exhibited problem. Quirky, yes and that's all Toyota auto transmission.

I have been leasing Toyota for a long time. Camry, Matrix, Corolla, the only other lease with a stick was a mid 2000s Yaris 3-door with a 1.5L. I pity those with a Yaris auto. I think Toyota tries to put a lot of tweaks in the transmission programming to boost fuel economy and for whatever drivability enhancements.

Just traded for a TRD Pro 6MT to teach the kids manual. They have been driving for a couple years so it's time. Hard to learn stick in a Tacoma for them as there is practically no feed back from the clutch pedal when the clutch bites.

I was thinking the spongy clutch would make it easy for someone to learn manual on. The accumulator makes it’s so you can make mistakes. it also helps that you can really lay the pedal down and not go very far. I’ve been contemplating teaching my girlfriend how to drive manual, but then again why? She has an Auto start/stop vehicle, and I believe she ordered an ev, for the the future:rimshot:.

No owner worries with a Toyota. 2020 SR and the Auto works fine.

yup, it’s my first pickup so this gives me a few years to try it out and see if I like it.

There is no feedback from the clutch because you have the clutch fluid accumulator in place. I would highly recommend removing that POS. Clutch will feel normal again. I could never rev match properly and my clutch shuddered when taking off on hills, clutch feels great now.

Thanks everyone. We’ve put well over 100 miles on it in the last 24 hours. Just about every road speed from slow dirt roads to paved highways. The truck performs flawlessly.

I’m so impressed by how solid it feels. We really love it.
