Quick question ya'll. I am debating on what rear end I should go with. I have a 2WD Taco crew cab. I have 4 1/2" bulge fiberglass fenders front and back. I am going with a long travel front end. I am running 35" tires. I am thinking of throwing in a Tundra or Sequoia rear for the width, strength, LS and disc brakes. I am also planning on throwing a shift kit and high RPM torque converter into the transmission. The diff would also get re-geard to 4:88's. Does anyone have suggestions?

If I were doing a spare no expense Taco build, I would put a Ford 9” rear axle in it. If you want to keep the ABS, weld Taco ends on the housing and have custom chromoly Taco axles made with splines to fit the 9”. If you don’t care about ABS, just buy Ford 9” chromoly axles with 6 lug wheel bolt pattern. It doesn’t matter if you go with 28 spline or 31 spline Ford 9”. A Taco motor is not going to break either.

Some people put a Dana 60 rear axle in. The only advantage over the 9” that I see to that, is the Tim Taylor bragging rights. “Oh! He’s got a Dana 60”.

The disadvantages to the 60 are weight and ground clearance.

Oh snap!!! Thank you so much. I will go with the 9" I had a feeling there was a solution.

There is huge support for the Ford 9”. You can get anything you want for it. Detroit locker, air locker, spool, whatever. Many people use them in very high horsepower drag cars. The big advantage of it is that there is a 3rd pinion bearing that keeps the ring and pinion from separating apart under heavy load. Like I mentioned above, decide if you want to retain ABS or not and proceed accordingly. Then talk to the people that make chromoly axles and get things worked out.

The 28 spline axles were in cars. The 31 spline axles were in 1/2 ton trucks. I run a 31 spline axle in in a ‘78 Ford with a 460 and I beat the snot out of it and it holds up, even with stock axle shafts. Chromoly axles are stronger than you need, but the key thing is they will build them for you to your specs.
