hi everyone. my 95 v6 4wd automatic tacoma has been acting up. i recently pressure washed under my truck and painted underneath to help prevent rust. only painted the frame and differentials. ever since that i noticed my truck has been losing power. i step on the gas and then it seems like it hesitates and then will randomly surge forward while trying to accelerate. after driving more then 30 minutes the truck will act like it wants to die when i start slowing down. its completely shut off on me twice while driving. i originally thought it was the throttle position sensor, replaced it and that didnt work. i also tested the battery and alternator both good. no check engine light ether… if anyone has any clue on what’s wrong with my rig it would be much appreciated.

If you have a distributor then I would start inside there. Specifically checking the coil for cracks.

If you have no distributer then check your ignition coils for cracks.

Otherwise I would go over the ignition system as a whole, check fuel pressure before the issues start and then after the issues start to see if it's decaying as the truck runs longer.

This one is more of a long shot but you can also try unplugging the maf (if you have one) and trying to start it again when it dies.

When it dies, without turning off the key try pulling the codes whether is be via obd or the flash codes from the diag port under the hood... i believe you short out terminals E1 and TE1 to pull codes from under the hood

Your automatic transmission solenoids are probably out. The truck will start shifting weird and losing power, and eventually start dying because the transmission will shift weird. The solenoids are about $150. They have a bad reputation to go at 250k. Same thing happened to mine.

On my 96 one of the PO broke the electrical connector for the trans at the trans. They just plugged the wires on the pins with no connector. I had a shift issue intermittently. The plug was not available individually, had to buy a whole junk yard harness just for the plug. It takes a few minutes to crawl under and give that harness a wiggle and removal to check for water being trapped.
