Help, 2006 Tacoma by automatic transmission

    Decided to change my automatic transmission fluid today, the truck had cooled down for a good 1 1/2 hours and was probably about 100 degrees when I drained it so now the concern and confusion. When I pulled the overflow plug well over 1 quart drained and when I pulled the drain plug aprox 2 quarts drained giving me around 3.2 quarts to replace like my owners manual says and was confirmed at the dealership where I bought the fluid. There are several questions hear. First is why did a quart of fluid drain out of the overflow? I bought this truck brand new and the transmission fluid has never been changed so the amount of fluid in the transmission was from the factory. I am very confused??? Please someone reply. I put the amount of fluid back that I drained. I am a Toyota loyal man and have owned nothing but Toyota's for 25 years now.

    Hello @Clw66 welcome to TW! I’ve performed a drain and refill on my 07 a little over a year ago. I experienced the same overflow “drainage,” but I wouldn’t stress over it. Toyota has been known to undermine quality control when it comes to fluid levels in transmissions. Most of the time individuals report that the transmission was LOW by a couple of quarts. My point being is that these transmission can handle a lot of abuse. As long as you’ve followed the proper refilling procedure (slight trickle from overflow), you’ll be alright. My truck had a rough shift from second to third before I performed the drain and refill at 115k. I’m now at 140k and the transmission is smooth as it can be.

    correct me if im wrong, but the over flow is suppose to be checked when the truck is running... and at like 120F.
