Well, my 7 year old trouble free Toyota is biased! What can I say.

Reliability is the reason I bought mine!

ITT: people who have had no issues with Toyota; and everyone they know who owns a non-Toyota, has every single issue known to a mass produced product.

do you think Toyota is not as reliable as the perception on this forum suggests?

I think it’s better than the average vehicle. I’m making the statement that everyone who owned a GM product that was bad just happens to be here.

I've owned 7 GM vehicles. Unfortunately for me they all had problems. It seems as though problems are normal and acceptable in the domestic vehicle owners opinion. So far with 50k Kms I've had no problem with this Toyota. Yes, there is the axle recall, which wasn't an actual problem, more a check to see if there was a problem. With the Chevy, by now I'd have been to all of the service advisers homes for birthday parties, Christmas, maybe a travel vacation or two, you know because I know them so well....:anonymous:

    Everyone:

Once again, really appreciate all the helpful insights here. Obviously, this is a Tacoma forum so I fully expected some bias towards the Tacoma (and even a bit of hostility towards the "other Japanese" truck). All good.

Interesting to note, despite this, that there are a few folks here recommending the P4X (@JJ Customs, @SGJarrod, @RCBS, thanks).
@kane22: yeah, the ZR2 is so badass looking (and driving, actually), but like you, I just can't get bast the very cheap materials in the cabin. Layout and tech is actually quite good, but I just see door panels and dashboards starting to rattle over time and all that hard plastic starting to chip and peel, and that's just going to bum me out.

As I said earlier: No to the fully modded taco. That was really just a sugar-high: I got swept away by all the mods already install that I would have installed myself. So if I were to get a Taco, it would be stock and I'd mod it myself. The more sensible route, for sure.

But here's where I'm at: Naturally aspirated V6 linked to a 9speed transmission (auto, not CVT) on a fully boxed frame with updated, comfortable, stylish interior and all the tech I need with nothing I don't, plus a locking rear diff and --believe it or not-- a growing aftermarket for off-road parts (CBI, Z1, AllDogs, Victory 4x4, White Knuckle, Expedition One, Coastal Offroad... all geared either wholly or partly towards the Frontier... so it's out there if you look for it) --all this seems to spell Nissan to me, despite the legitimate misgivings expressed here. (And, I have to say, from my research, I tend to agree with several of the views expressed in this thread: that the taco, at least the 3rd-gen, though perhaps more reliable than average, is not the only reliable mid-size truck out there and not the reliability unicorn it once was... just sayin'). Pound for pound and given my use case (daily driver, weekend warrior)... seems like this really is the way to go.

So at this stage, I'm starting to lean heavily towards the P4X and on Friday I'll go to test drive the one mentioned at the outset here. I'll keep you all posted (who knows, I might climb into the cockpit and instantly decide I don't like it), but I think between what I gleaned on this and the other forums (colorado and frontier), the P4X might be the truck most suited to my needs.

Many thanks again to you all for your help!

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
    Sensible.

Let me give full disclosure... I did not leave Toyota gleefully. Disappointedly would be more accurate. I have a long history with them. I could not buy a 24 Tacoma *just because it said Tacoma on it like I would have in 2013. Toyota Motor Corporation has been good to me. I don't feel like it's the same company it was ten years ago. Some folks here take it personally when I 'dis' Toyota. Why would you do that? I'm not trying to belittle you for buying, I'm bagging on Toyota Corp. and they mostly deserve it. Do you think that they would defend you? lol Your truck is not your identity fellas. At least, I hope not.

Simple, Reliable, Capable. That's what the name used to mean to me. 2 of those are out the window at this point in my own reckoning.

You aren't going to be disappointed with the Pro4x I don't believe. It isn't a Tacoma, but it isn't supposed to be. Just negotiate the best deal, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get a sweetheart deal on one. I hope Nissan can keep it together and will start paying attention to customer feedback. Whatever you do, stay away from GM.

This guy does a good job of going over all the off-road features:

I 'liked' the most recent OP post …
With that said, and so it appears the thread is done, I wouldn’t trade any two of the 3 contestant trucks for my 22 Pro if I had to keep'em for 2 years. But if I did make the trade I’d take the Tacoma and the Nissan.

Toyota‘s legendary reputation for quality came from durable trucks and SUVs built for Third World use being compared to malaise cars built to be disposable by the big three as a fuck you to emissions regulators and consumers.

They were also built in Japan at a time where the nation was at its peak, and there was great pride and a sense of superiority in their manufacturing.

Toyotas built in Mexico or Thailand are not that.

My Neighbor as a Nissan Pro 4X and its very nice. I like Nissan and have owned a old Hardbody back in the day which was a beast off road and an Xterra. The Nissan is a close second to the Tacoma and will always be. O have driven it before and went on a one-day road trip from Va. to NC. and it drove and rode nice. Would I buy one? Yes if a Tacoma didn't exist, seriously its a decent truck and at a darn good price. My longtime Friend who owned the Chevy dealership for 40 plus years bought the Toyota dealership some years back and its right across the street from Nissan who has 5 Frontiers to every 1 Tacoma. I personally would try and find a nice 22 Pro or a Trail. I have two Family members who own a Pro and Trail and they are sweet trucks. My advice is look around and one will pop up as a Tacoma for sale these days are here today and gone tomorrow. I would definitely skip on a GM and Ford, never again!

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I've rented a '22 Colorado ZR2 V6 before, and I can say that I would choose the Tacoma over the Colorado any day because of the interior. The Colorado's interior is plasticky and too spartan for my taste.

The Colorado ZR2 is a great performing off-roader out of the box though. I'd say it's more capable than any stock 3rd gen Tacoma.

While I haven't been in a Frontier Pro-4X, I've rented a '22 Frontier SV 4x4 before. I can say I do like how its engine felt. More lower end torque than the Tacoma. But, I don't know much about the Frontier's longevity other than the transmission being finicky.

If you decide on getting the Tacoma, I would look for a more stock example. If you don't like how the automatics drove, you can look into getting a tune. Multiple automatic Tacoma owners report being happier with their truck after getting a tune.

The 3.5 V6 out of the box, is indeed, pretty anemic on the lower end. You may have to rev it out, as it likes to make power up top. Again, a tune may fix this, although the Tacoma will never be a powerhouse (then get a bigger truck if you want a more powerful truck).

Probably op made up his mind and got the Nissan. But just in case he didn’t maybe take your time and look for a Taco built in the US, Texas. I know mine is built there. Purchased it last year, wasn’t easy to find an OR made in the States newer than 2018, stock condition, low mileage, maintenance history etc. But I found it. And as other peeps said: there must be a reason the Taco holds up the resale value. The reasoning that it feels slow, has minivan engine etc. has no merit. If you want a fast vehicle, buy a sports car. I sold my sports car and purchased a truck. And so far I’m happy with it. And I also checked different mid sized truck brands prior to my purchase. I did spent countless hours researching and this is how I ended with the Taco. I drove full sized trucks prior to being retired, when I worked on the rigs. And some of those full sized trucks were actually much slower than my Taco. But that was some 30 years ago. And I never understood this trend with fast trucks and SUV’s. If you want a fast vehicle get a sports car. Speed doesn’t help in the bush. And high centre of gravity doesn’t help in the twisties. 0.02

I'd just tell the dealer I'm here for the going out of business sale and want a Frontier. I want to drive off in a King Cab 4x4 for less than 30k.

I agree the 4X and aftermarket have seemed to grow in popularity.

Test drive them and hold the warranty accountable. I’m a little biased due to my almost 20yr Tacoma. Cheers!

The whole ‘pointing a finger to a carwash instead of a manufacturer defect while the dealership uses an automated car wash’ is too relatable and exactly why no one trusts dealerships or large corporations.
