The head gasket blew six months ago, and I'm finally trying to start it to see how I did. The starter from my 4Runner went into my gf's Tacoma, and I put new wear parts in her starter and put it in my 4R, so it might be the starter, but ...

I tried several things, so bear with me.

    1. First try starting: Heard one click.

    2. Battery voltage was above 12.2 V and below 12.45 V (I forget. I think it was at ~12.3 V).

    3. Hooked up a battery charger/starter set to start (50 A). Tried starting and there was a lot of rapid clicking. Now the battery voltage is 100% charged and reads ~12.45 V.

    4. Here's the weird thing. I now had the battery hooked up and thought I could power lock the doors (and hatch), but it wouldn't lock (didn't move).

    5. Tried starting again and got nothing.

*** Edited to add: I couldn't remember where the ground strap connected to the engine, and it ended up on the aluminum cyl head. I'm wondering if I should find a steel connection.

Starter contacts are common, did you keep trying and keep getting clicking?

Have you tried to turn the engine with a socket?

Note: I edited the original post, after you replied.

The starter brushes and whatnot were replaced when I ~rebuilt the starter from the Tacoma. I've got clicking, and nothing, as noted in the original post. I'm going to try to find another place to connect the ground strap that's steel instead of aluminum, then try the starter again (probably tomorrow).

Yes, I turned the engine by hand a bunch of times (after I got the head and such back together; to make sure the valve timing and whatnot wasn't going to interfere).
