One of the reasons I would of put a new radiator in since 1 of the coolers is inside it,they are not expensive.

Sounds like your coolant isn’t flowing. Possibly air bubble trapped. Like they said above, didn’t burp the system correctly or enough. Reservoir shouldn’t be full to brim.
No way 4x4 is connected to it. Like they said above also, you hit the trail (going slow), no air circulation = engine overheating easier.

    Hey @wenatcheekid,

You should tell your sister to invest some of the $$ she saved on the vehicle and follow these two pieces of advice. That 4.0 could have 100s of 1,000s of miles left. (If doing the radiator, do all the hoses too.)

The 4Runner goes in tomorrow for a transmission service at the Toyota dealer!

    TO ALL OTHERS:
The 4Runner is still running great and maintaining a normal operating temperature. She says it’s even remaining below middle on the gauge!

So the 4Runner went in for the trans service today, they didn’t mention anything abnormal so I assume everything’s good there. We decided to try and go wheelin again on some novice trails because it’s my sister’s first 4wd. Temp held great the entire time, and we stopped to snap this pic... then I noticed something...

...the lower radiator hose has a small, and I mean small, pin-hole leak at the bottom. Doesn’t drip when the motors off, but when it’s on and the system pressurizes it drips maybe every 5-10 seconds?

Next step is some new radiator hoses, (shoulda done them at the coolant flush/refill). Since we just did the flush, we plan on reusing and filtering the coolant back in afterwords because it’s fresh coolant.

Ah ha, that’s where the coolant disappeared to. Those tiny leaks can be tricky to realize you have a problem at all. Sometimes you can smell it.

Unfortunately when you do the hoses you dump most of the coolant out. When you catch it to reuse, sometimes it’s washed some dirt off and in with the coolant. I wouldn’t reuse it if that happens.

If you have worm gear hose clamps, a little trick. Lube them before removal and before putting them back on. Have spare new ones on hand because sometimes where they were tightened to will leave a tiny gouge. Then when you put it back on, the gouge will cause the gear to get stuck and strip. Sometimes when you unscrew it, the gear will just come out. Then it’s difficult to remove, you have to pretty much destroy it to get it to release. Then of course using the correct sized 1/4 drive socket is better than a screwdriver. The hose clamps without slots are better. That’s all you’ll find at most parts stores. I got some from Baker, they were aba brand, very high quality.

I’m currently dealing with this headache. I tow my vw buggy to Glamis and it’s a 4 he drive with slight grades, the overflow fills up and it soaks the passenger side of the engine bay and goes out my wheel well. I’ve had the truck get hot multi times but I’ve never let it overheat…

I spent 3k and had the head gasket done after it failed a block test. ( I turned the bluish purple chemical green ) after I drove normal with no issues.

that next weekend(veterans Day weekend nov12th ish I hooked up my buggy and went to Glamis. Broke my back in 5 places and drove home that Sunday.

on my way home the truck over heated, I never thought to top it off after pulling the buggy out. For the conditions I wasn’t towing the Buggy home…. I’m pissed but after reading this maybe a clogged radiator is my issue…. There was some nasty junk on the radiator cap, Think about it, the truck got hot one time prior to this after the new head gasket so then I replaced the cap.

I’ve got one of those aluminum radiator to put in it but that’s after I get the truck back to the shop to make sure the head is still good.

I’ll keep you updated,et me know of any solutions! I made my account just for this, the gurgle in the dash I hear and the heater only stays hot when on the throttle…. Any advice helps I’ve got a lot of time on my hands right now healing up

If it was a head gasket leak you'd be losing coolant and would see the level in the plastic tank dropping over time.

A quick temporary fix for small leaks is .......Duct Tape.

Wipe the area down, then make 2-3 wraps around the hose. The leak should hold for a while.

    All stock, baby!
I recently discovered a self-sealing tape that bonds to its self really well. I have a roll of it in my taco now in case of just such a leak. Permatex 82112 Self-Fusing Silicone Tape.
