I have Nitto Trail Grapplers, 285/75/17's with a 2.5 suspension lift. I got the Rockstar 2 wheels with a -12 offset, the performance shop said they would require to much trimming? Desert Rat said they could make it work, but I don't want to risk permanent damage. Would I be better off with some basic XD 17x9 with 0 offset?

Thanks for the reply! They are 17x9 with -12 offset. I think I may need something more like the XD 17x9 with 0 offset. Although, the people at Desert Rat think they can make them fit with lots of cutting.

Why not have them install them before assuming you have to cut?

The performance shop I brought them to, to do the lift and the install of the wheels and tires said that it would require to much cutting? They said I needed positive offsets on Tacomas, I was just wondering if anyone has had a different experience here. This is my first truck, so I am def learning some costly lessons.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
Its only a 4.0 back spacing you should be fine just note trimming is required with 285's no matter what wheel you use. Anyone that tells you otherwise doesn't drive over anything more then a speed bump ;)

So I can make the -12 offset wheels work? It's just going to need some serious trimming?

I would stay with the -12 offset which is 4.5bs but I would also go with a 285/70r17 versus a 285/75r17.

Sorry guys, I fat thumbed what I meant to type. They are 285/70/17 NOT 75's. With that in mind it seems you guys think it will work?

You will probably have to take the front mud flaps off and some miner trimming on the plastic. With the -12 offset you won't have to worry about the tire comining in contact with the uca.

    A 17x9" with a -12mm is a 4.0" BS

Well I guess wheels are measured different then normal math. 9" divided by 2 is 4.5" that would be a 0mm offset take away 12mm roughly 1/2" and you have a 4.0" BS

Thanks for all the replies gentleman, I ended up going with the 17x9 with 0 offset XD Black Crank. All they had to do was remove the front mud flaps, it fit like a glove!

    this and that...
285s are gonna require you to remove the front mudflaps and minor cutting. when i was running my small icon lift (3.5"), i was running a set of 285s. needless to say, i had to take off the front flaps and had some minor trimming at the bottom of the fender flare. if houre going with a 2.5 or 3" lift im guessing youre goinf to have to cut more.
