metal housing, motivX wrench, tighten until you hit the stop. no further. overtightening is THE issue. spinning it on by hand, like a spin on filter... you will have issues. Ski

    Okay….. I am perplexed.

Replaced plastic with aluminum OEM, after 5000 miles it leaked. Checked it, re-installed, leaked again after a few hundred.

Replaced with original plastic one. I use factory oil filters and o-rings from the dealer. Everything looks good, checked threads, o-ring placement, warpage on block. All looked good.

However, now after 3000 miles, it’s leaked again.

    2 questions:

    A) will cold starts, with 15+ minutes of warm, in 15°F weather, affect the sealing?

    B) I have used a OEM engine block heater to get it warm (2-3 hours) before starting at home. Anyway this could be a contributor?

Help!! 35 years of owning Toyota trucks and none have ever leaked.

Leaks usually happen with hot oil because it thins out.

Do the O rings have any indication of damage? Are you lubricating the O rings before you install them?

In generally proper O ring seals are solid for just about any condition that a vehicle would see.

Yep. I’ve worked on all of my Toyotas (Taco, Tundra, Corolla, pickups), bikes n quads, buggies, diesels, SxS. Never had an issue until now.

Where exactly is the filter leaking? Around the threads ?

    That stinks!

I'll be installing the same Aluminum Oil Filter Cap on my next oil change in May of this year. I'll be sure to put the o-ring in the same spot as the plastic.

The tower looking thing will be swapped with the one from the plastic one.

I'll also be adding the fumoto valve.

Be careful when you swap the center tube I e heard there can be issues with that
Your not supposed to remove it . Although when you look at it it doesn’t see. Like it would pose a problem

The spring action that holds it in-place is like a twist-off; not that difficult to change out.

At least, that's what I did when I tested out the swap...then put it back in the plastic filter cap.

    You're fortunate! lol

I'm thinking you've done all your oil changes...hence, you're the only one who's torqued it. (That sounds funny!)

Anyway, I'm wondering which one (Plastic or Aluminum) would stand the test of time.

    Ha!

Yes I’ve done all my oil changes. Not a chance will I let any dealer do my oil change.

    Working now a list
I have both plastic and aluminum both oem toyota.

I ran the oem plastic from
I doubt it's temp related. My 2017 sits outside in way below 0F weather.

I use the OEM plastic housing with OEM and Wix filters.

I have noticed if I don't lube the 0 ring and housing it goes in the 0 ring can twist and leak. Now I am sure to lube everything well before reinstall and then clean everything with simple green.

Well, I ordered a new OEM housing from a Toyota dealer in another state. Once it gets here, I’ll replace and see what happens. I’ll check the threads in the block again for any damage.

Another thing I noted: some dealers charge $120+ for the plastic housing, others charge about $50. Same part number.

I always take my housing apart and clean it out. No issues, provided you put it back together correctly.

I had a leak once, and it was related to the O ring slipping out of groove as I twisted it on. I'm willing to bet most issues are:

    1. O ring installed in wrong groove, or slipped out during install.
    2. O ring not primed with oil before install
