Hello, everyone! So I am trying to diagnose a noise that happens when switching from Drive to Reverse or Reverse to Drive and rolling about 10ft. Basically anytime you switch from reverse or drive and roll forward or back it's like a metal clanking sounding noise and I tried to have my father look at it while I rolled back and forth a little and my father thinks it may be the swaybar changing directions based on reverse and drive but I'm not sure if that is it. It only happens when switching between Park, Drive, or reverse and in any random order rolling forward/back. It only clicks after the first 10 feet or so of driving and it won't do it again until reverse/drive changes. I tried to record a video but not sure if it would help. I'm assuming it's just a tacoma thing but I really wanted to see if anyone had any ideas. I've had the noise for years and even switching front suspension it's been the same noise.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Brake pad slap. They shift slightly in the caliper when changing direction. Makes no sense, but it does it. It won't harm anything.

Hmm is that really it? I figured it was nothing but it happens all the time and I just want to know it’s fine haha. I’ll try and see if I can upload the video of the sound. It’s a pretty loud cla-clank

You may be missing the anti rattle clips that go on the caliper bracket. This gives the pads enough room to move just a little bit and make noise.

My truck has the factory brakes still and it still makes noise.

Hmm, I guess it doesn't matter then but it sure is annoying/concerning. I wonder if there's a simple way to fix it?

I don't know. I have seen several threads on this, but no one has come up with a solution; just an explanation.

well, good enough for me I guess haha. I’m not too worried about fixing it if it really doesn’t cause any issues at all. I’m just hoping we’re talking about the same noise.

I’m already used to it just concerned it’s not something good. But on the other hand I’ve heard it everyday for years so... whatever haha.

thing that worked for me.....new pads. lol but even though people say it depends on what pads you get. some new ones still "slap" depending on what brand you get.

i bought the auto zone duralast brake pads and no slap.

I had this exact issue and the dealer replaced for free. There was a TSB or recall on the u-joints.

I've never had the pad slap in any of the other vehicles I've owned even with replacement brakes.
