When I changed my original tranny fluid at 100,000 miles it was clear, red, and looked brand new.

And like an earlier poster, I don't see how the OP could get an additional 5.5 qts in the engine without it coming out somewhere.

I kind of did that years ago with one of my son's new to him '95 Subaru. Drained the automatic transmission fluid accidentally. Realized it and filled it with new transmission fluid. I noticed though I didn't drain it completely because it certainly didn't take the full amount of the specified capacity. I guess some fluid is just going to remain within the transmission system.

You made a mistake. Lucky no obvious damage so far.
I would drain and refill the transmission. Maybe add some kind of automotive solvent, like Berrymans B12 Chemtool. This is only an example, you research and decide. Drive for a few hundred miles(450 seems lucky), drain and refill.
Otherwise, take it to a transmission shop.

@TacomaOwner21, if you haven’t already, do the following. For the engine, drain all of the oil out, and refill with new. I assume you changed the filter already so you’re good to go there. For the transmission, add 3 quarts which is the approximate amount that would be needed after draining the fluid but not dropping the pan. Do not put any additives in anywhere at this time.

You can decide whether you want to follow the transmission fluid level check procedure yourself or have a shop do it, but the instructions are here in one of the good write-ups to be found on TacomaWorld.

And just take it as it comes after that. Likelier than not, things will return to normal. If later you find any shifting oddities, I’d recommend adding some Lubegard Platinum which appears to be one of those additives that does what it says it will do. In any case it shouldn’t hurt.

I drained the oil out of the transmission of my Harly Davidson a couple times I went to do an oil change. Thankfully I realized my mistake before refilling (because I checked the engine oil level and found it full)...lol

I started just buying both engine oil and transmission fluid for it every time I did an oil change...lol

Thankfully with a manual transmission in my Tacoma, there is no chance I mistake the engine oil plug for the transmission drain plug.

Things happen, I’m sure we’ve all done something that has caused us stress/damage to a vehicle we’ve owned.

I’m not sure how much mechanical stuff you do, but for me on oil changes when refilling the oil I always add slightly less oil (like a 1/4 quart) and then check it and get it right to the line. This is better and you would’ve caught your mistake right away, I think it’s also a good thing as we never really get all the oil out when we drain it, it prevents even slightly overfilling it.

Another advantage for the manual transmission - I got it because I thought it would last longer then a auto - never thought of the advantage of not mixing the oil !

Happens way too much. What I can’t figure out is he added 5.5 qts and didn’t check the dipstick and say hey wait a minute why is it reading half way up the stick.

I have a MT too - it is super clear that:
    oil drain = engine base/bottom
the tranny fluid = under the transmission

Having never been underneath an automagic - I guess they are not so distinct? as this keeps happening??

Still blows my mind each time I see this pop up though..
I check the fluid with the dipstick till I get it to the line; adding like 75% of the needed volume and then add/check till I am where I need to be [and checking a few drives later to make sure it is stable/good]
I never thought of dumping the stated volume of new oil in and calling it good

I have an auto. There no mistaking which is which. I mean heck if you think the engine drain plug is in the middle of the truck then the tranny plug would be at the tailgate.:D:rofl::eek:

On the Auto, as soon as you crawl under the truck, the first thing you’ll see is an oil pan and drain plug.
It’s really big and right there in your face.

You “kind of” have to look for the engine oil pan.

I can see how people would do it.
In the excitement of “this is going to be an easy one to change”, they drain the wrong one.

    This is what I was thinking . . .
The engine drain plug is under - the engine - which is not in the middle of the truck

At least OP is trying to do this sh*t himself, which is more than most ppl - lesson learned - no harm done hopefully

Maybe this happens when folks go under the truck from the side instead of the front? If you go under from the front the first thing you come to is the oil drain plug so I am not sure how anyone could miss it and then go farther back and drain the tranny.

That is exactly what I did on my New(ish) 07 taco after reading about this happening sometimes!!!:rofl:
I think what we can take away from this is yet another anecdote of how incredibly bulletproof tacomas can be.

I guess.... but never understood how one could drain the trans thinkin its the ENGINE oil... when there is literally NO ENGINE ABOVE the drainplug they are draining from lol.

OP. Drain the engine completely. Fill with proper amount of engine oil.

Fill trans with 4 quarts of Toyota WS fluid and do the proper level check and you will likely be good.
