That was what I was thinking too unless it was a fuel pressure test.

Or leakdown test... Anyway, other than coming on here to vent, OP will need to provide some concrete information for anyone here to give an opinion.

    Yeah 3 years ago.

I was merging onto the highway and started to accelerate. I didn’t really notice anything abnormal. Check engine light and trac off light (goes on n off) came on. Took it to my mechanic who just did the 30k maintenance. He works at Honda and use to work at Toyota.

P11EC code came up when he connected the computer. It’s a broad code but he told me O2 sensor.

took it into the Toyota dealership later that day told them it was the O2 sensor. Now they have had it a few days and are saying it’s cylinder 1 and they are checking for pitting.

Bet you have a bad valve like many others. There are multiple threads on this. (3.5L)

Pitting due to "cheap gas"???? What a load of fresh bovine dung that hasn't hit the ground........

If Cylinder 1 is pitted, then the problem lies in the porosity of the casting. They should be able to check this with a simple bore scope.

You are not getting the full story or full diagnostics from the mechanic.

I've been an engineer for 30+ years and this will be the first I've ever heard of "cheap gas" causing pitting.

Ethanol gas destroys stuff all the time. I bet the valve seats are pitted because water contamination in ethanol fuels.

Other than the head gasket issue in the 05s and early 06s, the 4.0 is as bulletproof as they get.

Not unusual for them to go 300,000 plus miles with routine maintenance.

What are you basing this statement on?

Amen! I have one in my '93 T100. It's a dog and has never been super-reliable but gets the job done. Of course I've had the headgaskets done twice, heads replaced once and had the engine rebuilt a year ago (which was a mistake but that's another story).

Yeah, the two engines were exact opposites. Toyota has made great ones over the years, but that 3.0 V6 was just an issue from day one. The Supra inline6 3.0 would be a sweet engine swap, not sure if it could be done.

Aaaaand it looks like it has been done.
