You are in MA? Yeah good luck finding a truck with less rust! I would buy it, that is surface rust. THe main rails look great. Dont listen to those that dont live in a salt state. SOme dudes on here scream like girls when they see a touch of rust and blow it out of proportion.

    Either will work.

@boogie3478 (aka tacomaholic) was talking about it in this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-have-you-done-to-your-2nd-gen-tacoma-today.6499/page-9695

I believe he was gonna do a video on it. In my view, any vehicle owner (but especially Tacoma) in a salt state should have, and liberally use, one.

Id pass brotha. I have a 2nd gen with ZERO rust and in texas. I got my 2012 tacoma trd off road 4x4 for $18k with only 57k original miles.
Good deals are out there, just have to be patient and pass on rust.

Looks absolutely fine, that's hardly anything. Everyone here is beyond paranoid as usual though, so thanks for the chuckles :D

Thinking this sold for 35k in 2015. You really think paying about 77% of the off-the-lot price for a 5 year old truck with a concerning amount of visible rust, one that’s been redesigned is a good deal? I get Tacoma resale is what it is, but that’s insane to me.

It's really not concerning, most of what he pictured is cast iron, it'll never rust through. Some is uncoated metal, like the ball joint caps, not a concerning place and normal. The other areas have light scale of welded seams. I see no delamination, no flaking, no perforation. Hell even the exhaust is damn clean. It's fine, yeah if you saw it in AZ it would likely be cheaper because it's uncommon to have any rust. But where this truck is, rust happens, and it happens fast. You build anything out of ferrous metal and spray it with corrosive chemicals like salt and magnesium chloride and it'll rust, doesn't matter who built it or how well they built/coated it. Tacomas hold their value and that's true of this one that is a pretty good example of good condition for where it is. Your gripe about it being older is sometimes what someone is looking for. I'd buy a decent second gen for a premium but you couldn't price a third gen low enough for me to take it.

Ive said it before, Ill say it again. People on this forum are uber hyper sensitive to surface rust. If youre happy with other aspects of the truck (including price), buy it, wash it well, and fluid film every nook & cranny. Including inside the boxed sections of the frame, behind the gas tank, up in around and behind the receiver hitch, even the drain holes in the bottom of the doors. Do that once a year and be done

Fair enough. My 2006 looks mint compared to this truck. I wouldn’t consider it until the frame was replaced and every bolt on the undercarriage was replaced, because many of them look toasted. But people go crazy buying these trucks. So have at it.

“5 year old truck, everything exposed rusted. 7k less than new price”. Ridiculous to me.

I take it your not a DIY kind of guy and have little experience working on vehicles, likely live in an extremely dry climate. Nothing here is even all that worn, this truck would be fine anywhere, wouldn't hesitate to buy at all. There are examples of terribly corroded trucks on here, this doesn't even come close to resembling one. Normal rain would make at least half of this rust anyway.

    This doesn’t come close YET

The fact is once rust starts it can spread quickly, which it looks like it is on this truck.

Yes some people can be over dramatic about it but let’s not pretend like this level of rust on a truck this new isn’t an issue, yes?

And your assumption about rain is exaggerated. My 2011 is a California truck (and yes we get rain) and has practically 0 rust. So nahhh

It's really not to the point where its alarming, you buy anything from the big three with a frame and you'll find the same. Ferrous metal plus corrosive chemicals equals corrosion, pretty simple equation. If we were going based on your sentiment it would be wiser to just not buy a vehicle at all because "it will become a problem" after the first winter. Live in a cold weather state, this is what happens, sorry... that's how it works. This truck is surviving very well for where it is, looks like the owner did a pretty decent job of rinsing the frame off. Good news is, if you stay in sunny California you'll never have to worry about it.

totally agree, I see no real structural issues, just surface rust on cast parts....frame looks good, its just surface....

take a good weekend, wire brush it with a drill, spray some rustoleum on it

It looks to cover the bulk of it, looks pretty damn clean for where you live. If you have a local Krown dealer or you don't mind getting a bit sticky, get some Fluid Film and apply it all over the major metal components, it's a good first step to slowing corrosion on any vehicle in the northern salt states.

Not sure how you made that conclusion. I do all PM from plugs to belts to brakes to fluids. I live in CA, wheel my truck, crossed low rivers in my truck, go to pismo multiple times a year, have a cabin in the Sierra which brings be through snow 6-8 times a year and my 14 year old truck is pristine compared to this one.

Not saying the truck is toast. Probably just fine. My point is paying so close to new pricing when there’s a potential issue is risky for me. Been clear that *I* wouldn’t touch this at 27k. But I do get peoples standards are different. Especially those who live cold climates where they salt in winter.

We get rust in Colorado but nothing like the upper Midwest and Northeast. I moved here from Missouri in the 1990s and have been hyper sensitive and spoiled that it's not more of an issue. It can be slowed and repaired even if it's inevitable for the most part.

The point IMO is the previous owner appears to have taken almost zero effort to protect the truck in a place where it's a problem. Unseen rot has already started and it's a dice roll that it will be eligible for any frame replacements down the line. It seems to me to at least needs the work put in to clean, paint and coat the truck.

Couple that with the PITA it'll be breaking bolts when repairing things I just don't see the logic in paying the kind of money being asked.

I'd be looking for something worth traveling to get instead of paying the inflated prices. Same money gets you a mostly rust-free truck in southern states so you're starting with less rust that you can protect. It may be more miles but not necessarily a lot. I got an always in Colorado CPO truck from a dealer, I'm the 2nd owner, at 42K miles & 6 years old, they were asking $4k less and I thought I was overpaying. But I was looking for stick shifts and that reduces the selection big time.

This would be common sense. Ignore the meatheads.

I get under my truck every fall and treate the rusted seams and welds with a profuct called Corroseal prior to hetting it re -Krowned'. The bottom line is that while my 09 looks better that that 5 year old truck, ever retreating affected areas, the treatment lasts a little less time than ot did previously, and this males the Krown treatment have a shorter life in those areas. You aren't going to turn back teh clock on someone having just put gas in it and drive it, but the point is that for that money, be patient and find one that someone turk better care of.

    To the OP,

I'm not sure what part of MA you are in....
There are a few Tacos on car gurus that are about equal other than the super low miles:
A 2014 DCSB 4x4 with 44K on the clock in West Roxbury for $23.4k
A 2015 DCSB 4x4 with 52k on the clock in Lowell for $23.7k
A 2014 DCSB 4x4 with 48k on the clock in Westborough for $23k
    A 2015 DCSB 4x4 with 47k mi in Epping NH for $24K

A 2013 DCSB 4x4 with 80k mi on it in Franklin NH for $20k ...3.5x the miles but all still under 100k which is nothing for these trucks.

Now its a given that there are no photos of underneath on these trucks but you may be able to use the pricing as ammo to bring down the price of the one you are looking at.

    Hope this helps.
