Holy fuck ... Get this. This ended up being extremely complex but I half figured it out. I hope y'all can fill in the details that are missing.

2017 Tacoma sr5 2wd 6 lug. Which I wanna say fits the description of a prerunner because normally it's 5 lug.

How does a car get brake booster vacuum?

Normally it attached to the intake but on this specific one has an external vacuum pump that mates up, with teeth, to the intake cam on bank 1 (passenger). The cam also has an oil passage going down it that feeds oil into the external pump to keep it cool.

Well when this engine is from a 2017 but idk if it's a specific package or even if it's from a Tacoma (I'ma call lkq to verify via vin). Anyways this one did not come with a pump. It came with a (this is important) a well machined cover plate that even had a gasket. I'm almost positive lkq didn't go thru the trouble of making a machined cover plate like that. I'll post pics of it when I get back to it sat night or Sunday.

Anyways, I installed the vscuum pump from the old to the new head in the back. The cam for sure had the teeth to mate up (I can feel them) but I'm not sure if it has oil passage since I can't see. I turned on the truck and it worked for a grand total of 20 ish mites because it threw the cam retardation code. Got the idea that maybe the pump was contaminated from the pr re vious vandalised engine so I took it off. The muthe fucker was seized as fuck. It even had a nasty hot spot on the backside and burned the bar code sticker from toyo factory. So it overheated. The only two things I can think are...

    1) the pump was contaminated from the previous engine and failed. All it needs is a new pump.

    2) the engine came from a car/truck that didn't have an external pump which explains the nice cover plate. Which means the cam would be diff and not have the oil channel from the cam to the pump. But it has teeth on the cam that mates to the pump. So what if this pre runner has bigger brakes (because it's 6 lug) thus needs better stopping power so Toyo said external pump? I just so happen to get an engine that doesn't have that "special" cam...?

Anyways, I put the cover plate back on and now no cam code but it has no booster brakes. It's all manual brakes. Very fun.

So.... Does anyone know if this sr5 (prerunner?) Has a diff cam than others of the same engine? Or is this just a rare case of a pump failing?

Also, I O2 sensor was just the relay (original obd code was for O2 heater cicuit malfunction on both upstreams). Some fucking idiot I call my friend decided to remove it and not tell me. So I stole his horn relay and now his o2 sensors work. I'm not gonna tell him.

    Edit:

Just to clarify. I used the old vacuum pump because the new egine didn't come with one. Also, I'ma call lkq for vin so I can call the dealer and ask parts guy for intake came part numbers to see if they match. If they match I know the cam is correct. If they don't then something is fishy. I can't do this til Monday but I'm hoping someone here would know if there is diff intake cams on these engines between trims or even vehicles if this engine is found in other vehicles.

There may be a brass oil passage plug installed into the donor engine. Do you not still have the old engine? Look at the cams from that engine also the back of the head.

What would it look like? It is obvious the cam has a brass plug? I reached back there and felt the teeth and gonna feel for the oil passage hole to see if there is an obstruction. I do have the old engine so I can compare what I feel and I can maybe fit a phone back there to take pics. I went hog exterminating so I'll be back either late tonight or tomorrow to report back.

yea. Take a good look at the old engine. Back of the head and camshaft, then use your phone camera to compare.

If the new engine came from a trd off-road, it would have a different braking system that's kind of like hydro boost for added braking for crawl control. Doesn't run on vacume and I would imagine would have a nice looking block off plate where the vacuum pump would be.

Update. The vacuum pump that mates to the cam burned up and locked up. I looked at the old cam and the hole is nice and deep but there seems to be something obstructing the oil hole on this new cam. I have no idea what it is and no amount of picking or trying to fish it with a magnet is letting it come loose. It almost looks and feels like it's part of the cam in there. I'm really at a loss as to what it is. It's not a brass plug but I can't rule it out since it's such an awkward angle. Any video and pictures I take doesn't make it any clearer.

Also, called the dealer and compared the lkq vin number and this trucks vin. The guy at the parts Dept told me both hydroboost and this tradition vacuum pump design use the same cam. This Sam part number.

    Any other insights? Thanks

Anyone have a torque specs on the camshaft bearing cap?

Looks like there is an obstruction preventing the pump from getting oil. I'm trying to get to the hole under the bearing cap that feeds oil into it.

I can only find torque specs on the bearing cap for gen 2
