I like this thread. OP, assuming you get lucky and come across the vehicle driving around one day, what's your plan? Hopefully the current owner would hear you out.

I would first ask him if I could talk to him about his truck and then go on to tell him my story... Hopefully he'd sell right there if not I'd ask him to keep me in mind for when the day comes that he would sell it... And that'd be it and not getting it would suck but atleast knowing it's still around is cool I guess.

Here's a finding the Toyota story to give you hope:

Late 1977 - my dad bought a mustard yellow Toyota Land Cruiser, a country boy's first brand new 4x4. Like this one:

Mom was pissed. We lived in the middle of the city in New Orleans - what was he going to do with that jeep in the city??

May 3, 1978 - the entire city flooded. I was stuck at school, upset that we were going to have to live off pb&j for the foreseeable future, when dad pulls up in his LC. We waded/were carried by adults out to the street and the Toyota, and me and my neighborhood friends were the only kids to go home that day. Dad spent the rest of the afternoon and evening pulling people out of deep water and giving people rides all over the city.

1982 - Dad sold the LC and bought a Bronco (which I totaled in high school). We kept lots of fond memories of hunting trips in the Toyota, and of course memories of the flood when he was the only vehicle moving in a major city paralyzed by high water.

Fast forward to April, 2000. I'm now an avid whitewater kayaker, looking for the next great creek for extreme kayaking. Along with one of the premiere kayaking video producers of the day, I embarked upon an exploratory hike of a remote creek in northern California. We were trespassing (we sorta had permission from the caretaker) on an isolated piece of property miles into the backcountry in northern California.

On the far side of a river crossing, miles into the woods, we came upon the carcass of a Toyota Land Cruiser. It had been painted green, was faded with age, and obviously hadn't been driven in a few years. How it got across that river and way back in those woods must have been a wild tale.

Plastered on the windows were my dad's old Bass Pro Shops stickers, and on the back was a resale decal from a car dealership in Gonzales, Louisiana - the home town of our neighbor's brother - the guy my dad sold that Cruiser to. I later found the landowner's email and got the story out of him of the guy who had bought that Toy and driven it way out there to that place.

So you never know how far or wide these Toyotas will travel, or when you'll find 'em again.

Just know that wherever that truck went, it was probably a hell of a ride.
