It certainly was an auto. Thanks for chiming in and giving better advise. I never thought to consider auto or manual for the op's situation.

its suggested to run a 9in wheel. the tire will wear more in the center. the sidewalls wont be straight either making for a squashy ride. rule of thumb is keep the tires less than 2in wider than the rims. 12" tires on 8" rims is pushing it

bottom line rim width alters tire profile. profile is the contact patch on the road. wheels to wide for tires makes a negative profile wearing the outside of the tread, also makes it easy to break the bead in an aired down situation

Yeah i still dont really agree with that too much. but thats just me. 12 inch tire on a 10 inch rim or wider just isnt right. sidewall difference is really minimal and as for a squishy ride...well i get this anytime i go to bigger tires with any pickup ive owned. its always a softer ride because your adding more rubber to the sidewall...well that is if your not running 18" rims or something crazy like that. And for offroad, the more side wall the better. As for wear, you just need to find the right tire pressure for your setup.

Which is the reason I like to stay on the more narrow side of rims but obviously not in the ridiculous realm:)

Just my thoughts and experience on the subject FWIW
