I recently purchased a 2001 Doublecab and have been taking care of all of the mechanical things first. I have an oil leak which looks to be coming from the back side of the engine. I'm wondering if anyone knows where it's most likely coming from or a list of things to check. It does seem like it's coming from pretty high up. It would be nice to have some sort of a plan going in, rather than just taking things apart until I find it since this is my only means of transportation right now. I've attached a few pictures.

Valve cover AND rear cam oil seals. Do it all at one time and done. Unlike me.

Well I would clean the engine and check it frequently to see where it's actually coming from. My ol lady's mom has an 02' 3.4L that's leaking from the valve cover, still cleaned it to verify that there wasn't any other leaks!

Thank you. I'll read up on changing those seals and pick up a few cans of brake parts cleaner next time I'm out.

Before replacing the valve cover gasket, check and see how loose the bolts are. I had an oil leak on my 04. The dealership wanted 500$ to replace. The valve cover were hand loose.

I had a set of spark plugs to put in anyway, so while I was out there I figured I'd give that a shot. ALL of the valve cover bolts were loose enough for me to remove with a nut driver by hand. I snugged them up with a ratchet, so I'll see how clean the block stays after I get all of that sludge off. There was a little bit of oil in each of the spark plug tubes. I think everyone is definitely right about the valve cover gaskets. If I end up having to change them, I'll get a bunch of new gaskets and do the rear cam oil seals while I'm in there.

    Thanks for the help.
