Hey, so I’m working on refreshing the suspension on my 2000 Tacoma 4x4, I just finished up replacing all the ball joints and I figured I’d do need shocks while I’m at it.

Everything was going fine until I realized that my shock mounts do not match anything I've seen on any other Tacoma. A previous owner had been running some Bilstein 5100 (same shock on putting in, others are just tired) with Eibach coils, however, the weird part is the way this assembly mounts, I’m including photos because I’m not even sure how to explain it.

Any idea how I can take apart this coil over and reuse everything up the shock? My Macpherson Strut spring compressor doesn’t seem to fit between the coils.

Should I just buy stock strut mounts or can I use these weird ones? Thanks!

I’d just buy new top hats/rubber pieces.

probably need new springs as well

Looks like the old Toytec design. You’ll need new springs. Old ones can’t be used.

They can’t be used because of their age or they won’t fit these shocks? Is there a spring that would be recommended for this application?

I suppose I should include that it’s a V6 with ARB and Warn for the front weight considerations of new coils. It rode pretty well before I took it all apart.

    Current springs are too long.

just looking for stock height I assume?

On the old setup pictured it was lifted about 2/2.5 inches (I was told, I never owned it stock and it’s been lifted this way a long time.) I’d like to maintain the same height it was at. I mentioned some weight dependent things above.

That spring looks a little long for the new shock. I would look at toytec, eibach or old man emu to keep the lift without compressing the spring by moving the perch up a few clips on the new shock.

Too long and those have a flat bottom. Stock springs are slightly different.

Aside from what's already been mentioned, regarding the mounting of the coilover to the coilover bucket on the truck, those shocks look old and are most likely long overdo for replacement.

They're non-serviceable shocks, meaning they get disposed of after they reach the end of their life.

Not sure how much the scrap metal is worth if you pulled the coil off the shock.
