It is kind of an aquired taste, you're either going to like it or hate it. To be honest, I actually hate the front end of the Katana also. I bought it because I was looking for something in the 750 - 1000 cc range and this popped up for a great price with the Yoshi pipes and Stage 1 kit. It may be ugly but it'll haul ass :D

Yeah, it is comfy as hell, one of the biggest selling points of the bike. It's a little lurchy with the stage 1 kit and the exhaust but it's incredibly comfy and I've done nothing to it besides routine maintenance.

5100's are holding up well and the rear end is now 2" higher :D

If you MUST have a 600 cc inline 4 than look at the honda CBR600 has a flatter powerband is less prone to spiking, has decent torque for a 600 which makes around the town riding more enjoyable.

But honestly if a Ninja 250 is out of the question then look into the Ninja 650 like mine or the fully faired Suzuki SV650

my old 250... my girlfriend still rides a blue one of these...

What about the Katana or YZF600? Both in-line 4 cylinder engines and both more timid than the CBR.

My reccomendation. I started with a CBR 600, glad I didnt get a 250. That being said I was lucky during learning to ride and didn't try to show out too much. I reccomend going to a local Harley dealer or seeing if a local bike shop has the MSF (motorcycle safety foundation) beginners course. Attend that and you are going to start off much better than I ever did. I know my local Harley dealer has the course on weekends so call them up (also gives you an insurance break).

both good bikes from a riders perspective except they are ugly as hell... but that is a preference thing.

Once again I want to reiterate... Inline 600 CC bikes are not novice bikes, they are engineered to be as close to as a race bike as allowable on the street.

I think the Ninja 650R and SV650 are two of the best beginner bikes out there that you wont outgrow...

However, I do not regret owning the 250, it taught me so much and was fun to flick around on the twisties...

I sold it because I was doing a lot of highway riding and that thing got tossed around by the wind. Its great around town and on the back country roads but on the highway the 250 is PITA.

The 650 on the other hand does not kill your back for long rides, handles very well, and has more than enough power to have fun.

People are right about the 250. When I was getting my license, I was so bored riding those 250's lol.

Picked up a CBR600 as my first bike and night and day difference! You don't have to go fast to have fun, that wasn't the reason I bought a 600. But man that thing was fun to ride lol

Those bikes are pure sex, especially with a nice exhaust and tune! Those and the TLR 1000, something about those V-twin high displacement sport bikes

My dads buddy races that pikes peak hill climb and he built a fully custom sidecar out of a 199?? TL1000. It has a magnaflow car muffler on it and it is by far the best sounding engine I have ever heard. The thing rips too:D
