I got a 2001 Toyota 3.4 4runner auto. I know this is taco discussion but i get better reply's here. Any ways the 4 runner is in very good shape. I got stuck in a little drift yesterday in 4wd and couldn't get out because the stupid vcs kept going off. I tried giving it gas and made some clunking noises so i stopped and waited till i got pulled out. When I got pulled out i put it back in 4 and it will grinding and clunky. So i brought into my shop and put it on all 4 stands and had a buddy listen while i started the 4runner. I would put in 4x4 and when I released the brake slowly it would start grinding from the diff. I don't even think the wheels would spin. Is my diff screwed? Or my cv joints? It runs good in 2wd.

It really clunks when i put it into 4wd and them put into drive or reverse it clunks hard i can drive it down the road and it works but clunks every so ofton

Sounds like you shredded some teeth. Time for a new ring and pinion.

OP - do some searching for "blown front diff"

This is an example (his is really bad though and he also blew his rear diff at the same time): You can find a new R&P for around $250 - $300. Then you got install costs unless you can do it yourself.

I thought 4.30 was the lowest gear ratio in a stock 4Runner. I just blew my front diff last month and finally got it back on the trails with 4.88s and an ARB locker up front. I shredded the spider gears and cracked the ring gear.
