It is kinda high of a price for a 1st gen. Low mileage is good but still...

Exhaust, gas tank skid, and a lot of other items that usually rust to shit seem okay. I wonder what is up with that frame though... somebody could’ve touched up some surface rust. Doesn’t look like some of the more alarming full undercoatings I’ve seen pictures of where they’re clearly hiding something. In fact this could even be the Toyota frame coating they put on during the recall. Might be worth investigating more but the price is pretty high.

what? NOPE NOPE NOPE. Way too ridiculous of a price.

They're counting on the fact that it has low miles to fetch $$$ but don't fall for it You can see that frame was clearly sprayed over to hide rust. Even if truck has low miles, the frame is too rusty and it's definitely not worth what they are asking for. What's the point of having a low mileage truck if the frame is rusted through??

17k would be for a mint-condition truck and this one isn't. Body looks good, but the frame... eeww. PASS on this one

might be that toyota undercoating but the frame replacement period is over now. If that frame is rusted through, he will be on his own to fix it as toyota won't do a thing for him

I thought the coating extends it by 15 years from the date it was applied?

If I were you I would call whomever your insurance company is and ask what the value of a totaled-out truck is. Be sure to include the mileage too. Then make a decision about how much you want to gamble...

It would not be a nice day for you if you popped for that truck and then had some bastard T-bone you (or worse).

no, it's from the date of manufacture. But not only that, you had to have had your frame paint-sprayed by toyota during a certain period (I think it ended in 2010), then you were eligible for a frame replacement if the frame did rust through before the 15 years deadline.

    But for this one, it is too late (2002 + 15 = 2017) :(

As for 1995-2000, instead of having the frame replaced, they were bought back by toyota and crushed

perhaps frame passed inspection initially and then that stuff was applied?

    it certainly should!
    but only in certain circumstances

i have asked my insurance company this very same question! ... multiple times in fact!
they could give me NO answer whatsoever! and my carrier is one of the big guys!
... even asked them if i was hit by someone uninsured or underinsured what do I need to do? ... no good answer was given!
I have lost much much sleep over this not knowing what to happen if I find myself in such a predicament with all the crazy driving I see nowdays

It's 15 years from the truck's "in service date" so 2002 + 15...he's 2 years outside of the warranty.

The only 1st gens that still qualify for the frame warranty are *some* 2004s.

For most folks, 90% of their worries are over things that they have NO control over. This sounds like one of them

i work for one of the largest insurance companies. the claims department can’t predict the actual cash value of a vehicle until a total loss occurs. so that’s why you can’t get an estimate. they should certainly be able to explain your coverages though. i’m not sure what state you’re in, but some offer uninsured/underinsured bodily injury and/or property damage.

all i have seen while poking my nose around is a very large range of valuation #s ... a near $10,000 spread is unsettling to say the least!
i do not want some geico or progressive type raping me

self insuring yourself is legal. you just get an indemnity bond. that way you don’t have to pay an insurance companies.
