please help I'm looking for a rack and pinion transfer lines nobody seems to know what I'm talking about and they're trying to sell me a return line or pressure line it's the steel tube that goes from one end of the rack and pinion to the other mine is leaking out of one end and should be a simple fix but everybody is real quick to sell me a brand new rack and pinion for 250 to $350went to a Customline shop today in SoCal and they said that they couldn't make the line because of the flared fitting they could make some adapters and kind of Mickey Mouse it but it would have been more expensive than what I'm seeing online trying to spend 40- 50 bucks any ideas where I can get the line I've tried the junkyard and the closest one that has my truck is about 75 miles away.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You'll have to get a custom line made or make your own line. I've dealt with this issue on multiple vehicles. The only way to get that line is to buy the entire rack and pinion; even the dealer won't sell you the line by itself because it just simply isn't sold on its own. You can take some 1/4in hard lines and make the flare fitting yourself; it's not that hard to make if you find the right fittings or re-use the fittings from the original line. I think its a 1/4in hard line or a little bigger. I made one for a vehicle a while back when I had to repair a rack and pinion. The fittings were hard to find I had to re-use the old fittings.

However if your lucky you may find a company that may make it; try A1-Cardone or Dorman as they may be your best luck; I would call them and ask about the Hydraulic rack and pinion transfer tubing assembly. They only do make them for a very very limited make and models of vehicles. In fact I just dealt with a customer a few days ago because he was trying to replace the exact same line you speak of but in a Honda Accord; sadly no one makes one without buying the entire rack and pinion for his vehicle.

so you don't know of anyone that makes an aftermarket line I noticed when I was at the shop to make the custom line there was little rubber grommets on the inside got super excited thinking it was an easy fix tried two different gauges and still have the leak any other ideas it's crazy that they don't have a part number or sell this line by itself

when I do a search online with my specific criteria AutoZone Napa and O'Reilly come up but there's no specific fit for the line on a whim I just ordered the line from the manufacturer from AutoZone I'm just worried about the cross threading if I put it in and it's not the right size don't want to throw Parts at the problem has to be an easier fix if I take it to the dealer I'm worried about them keeping in a few hours and then saying it's my rack and pinion I need to replace the whole thing when we know that's not the case

It's a line that is rarely ever replaced so many manufacturers won't make it because there's just no money in it, not enough demand. You can try a junk yard and see if your able to pull it off. However it shouldn't be a hard line for a hydraulic shop to make; they may need the fittings though as those damn things are so hard to find. For some reason; in my experience those fittings are such an odd-ball size that you just can't buy them anywhere. Must be a Japanese vehicle thing.

agreed thanks brother if anybody else has any input or a spot to get the line done for cheap I guess I'm checking it 75 miles in hopes that the line is still intact I'll replace the grommets and hopefully that does the trick thanks again for your help

Thanks guys for the info in this thread.

I needed to remove the starter on my truck and found that my header pipes were in the way. By removing one of the PS lines on the rack (which was rotted anyway), I was able to remove it that way.

I was able to make a new line using 1/4" brake line and I re-used the existing fittings.
