    What's wrong with my grips?

They're comfortable to me and much better than the hogue that was on there

I didn't ever like the feel of any wood/plastic grips I felt...a buddy traded his pachmeyer for my hogue

What's wrong with those grips? I have the same ones on my sig 225. Much better than the stock plastic grips.

Commander is a shortened government model. It has a 4" barrel instead of 5". Most all 1911 makers produce a commander length 1911. Officers model is a 3" barrel and shortened grip.

And for the record, I'm not trying to tout Kimber as the end all be all, but they CAN be good reliable pistols...even the supposed "bad era" ones

Especially when you don't pay full price. Is the price of a new one a little high? Maybe, but it's still a fine firearm...especially if you get a deal

Roger. I like the Hogue rubber double diamonds (Kimber uses these). I put wood on but switched the rubber DDs over to a MilSpec.

Do you prefer the checkered front strap grip of those Pachy's to the smooth front strap underneath them?

I Google'd, they're checkered. My Pro Carry HD was smooth and I found it nice to hold.

My eclipse target 2 has checkered front and back grips as well as adjustable night sights, skeletonized trigger, skeletonized Hammer, stainless, match grade barrel, match grade trigger, match grade Bushing, polished feed ramp, beveled mag well, wood grips and it does not have a ambidextrous safety (which i did not want so i could put a crimson trace grip on later). All Stock which i think that pretty much covers most of the normal 1911 mods.

My 5" Springer gov't from a long while ago, Since then I've fit a beavertail grip safety & loop hammer, sent it out for slide milling for novak sights, had the ejection port lowered & flared & it's currently looking very rough as I file/smooth/polish on it. It'll eventually get reparked.

For $1500, I'd try to find a good base gun around the $1000 mark. Personally, I'd choose Colt first, Springfield second.
Then send it off to a reputable shop, such as Novak's for example, and get a set of sights installed and a basic reliability package with the remaining $500.
Maybe Sights, Throat/Polish chamber and ramp, Tune extractor, maybe get a spare fitted.

    To the OP's original question.

The SA TRP is a fine weapon, and not a bad choice in that price range.

Avoid Kimber, overpriced for the quality of parts used, Kimber excells at one thing, marketing.

For your price range, I think the best bet would be a Dan Wesson Valor, great weapon, wonderful fit and finish, they have really stepped up their game.
The only down side is availability, fire took out their factory and just know getting back up and running, long back order list!

If you could bump up your budget a bit (150-200) then look at Les Baer, I own a safe full of Browns and Wilson Combats, most accurate gun I have is a Baer. Dollar for dollar I think Baer is one of the best buys out there.

Wilson and Browns are outstanding in every way, but not within the budget you set.

Colt is a good choice and is the most reliable 1911 out of the box and will always maintain it`s value better than any other

Op, depending on how much you want to spend is the main question, go up around 2k and a Baer would be a good choice

Dan Wesson makes some fine 1911`s

Remington R1 offers a good bang for your buck

Many people will say buy this or that because that is what they own, I own and have owned numerous 1911s, I would take a basic GI RIA over a top of the line Mimber which is the most unreliable 1911 on the market, why do I say this ? because I work on them as well.

I shoot my Les Baer PII more than any that I own and when it comes to 1911 for carry the Colt Combat Commander gets the nod
