So I have a little dilemma I would like some input on. I currently have a full OME setup ony truck (887s, Dakars, and nitrochargers all around) and now that I have a lot of extra weight that I'm packing around and my 887s sagging a bit not being enough to handle the weight I was originally considering 886s with a top plate spacer. After my experiences in Moab and realizing I want a little more capable suspension I am looking at getting some Icon extended travel coilovers, rear extended travel shocks and some Wheelers Superbumps. I initially was going to go for broke (literally) and get extended travel RR coilovers with 700 lb springs and extended travel 2.0 RR rear shocks, but now that I'm thinking about it... I don't do a ton of high speed runs but for what I do, the OME stuff is not enough. The way I see it I have a couple options...

    1. Get the front and rear Icons without resi and use the money I save to get a new set of tires (going up a size).

    2. Get the fronts with resi and non resi rears and still get tires albeit less expensive ones.

    3. Say screw it and get the front and rear RR's so I can't say I regret not getting them and for pure cool factor. Get tires when my current ones wear out.

    4. Go another route, and why?

if you run hard for an extended amount of time and/or if you live in an area where it gets hot as balls, get RR. I've been in my friends 4runner when his non resi's faded and it hit hard with no indication. Only thing to do after that is take it slow or pull over and let them cool. I decided RR's for my rig after that trip. And it was only 80's or low 90's that day.

It gets pretty damn hot here in Southern Oregon, but probably nothing compared to AZ. We've already been over 100 here a couple times this summer. I just noticed when running some fast sandy washes/washboards/dirt roads in Moab my OME shocks just weren't up to the task. Here at home we don't have the same terrain but I plan on traveling all over western U.S. Off roading and camping so I dunno.

The standard middle of the road approach is non-RR 2.5 fronts and RR 2.0 rears. The fronts being 2.5 already have plenty of oil volume and a larger surface area to dissipate heat. The rear 2.0 has less volume and so the RR helps with that and getting a RR on the rear 2.0 isn't that much more money. I've read a number of build threads with from people this setup who run twenty miles or more of washboard without issue. Many of these same builds came from OME and say the difference going to ICON is night and day for washboard runs as well.

Remember, the OME being a twin tube design dissipates heat a lot less effectively than a mono-tube design and has lower oil volume as well. So going to the ICON will already help a lot with fade compared to the OME.

Not only will you enjoy the benefits of extended play time without cavitation of the shock oil (fade), but you will also experience longer service intervals. I have ran the piss out of my shocks and upon having to rebuild one due to defective seals, the oil that came out of it was astoundingly clean.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself the reservoirs even if you don't run hard right now. They will have the ability to keep up with your wheeling if you live in a hot environment, stay cleaner longer, but they will also be prepared for the hammering you may give them if you ever decide you want to push your rig's limits even further. Of course at that point you will want to consider upgrading other pieces of the suspension, but I digress.
